General Motors asks the public: 'How would you sell a small car to Americans?'

2011 Chevrolet Spark shown. Not necessarily the car that GM will build in the U.S.

General Motors recently announced that it is planning to build an unspecified small car here in the United States at one of the idled UAW-GM facilities

On GM's Fastlane Blog, Gary Cowger, Group Vice President, Global Manufacturing and Labor Relations, asked readers several questions regarding the company's future small car offerings.

  • What do you think of small car production here in the US, and how would you generate market demand here?
  • Which facets of a small car would you emphasize if you were going to roll out this kind of car?

Basically, GM is asking "How the heck can we sell these things to Americans in considerable numbers?" Without the impetuous of high fuel prices, that is a very good question to ask.

For more info: Check out GM's Fastlane Blog and give them your opinion!

The new Ford Fiesta is a Menace to society (Part I)

White Menace in front of his Fiesta

Okay, the Fiesta isn’t a menace in and of itself. Rather it is being driven by a Menace, as in White Menace of Live 105 (a San Francisco modern rock station). Menace, aka Jason McMurry, is one of a hundred agents who are spending six months behind the wheel of their own Ford Fiesta, ”lifestreaming” their experiences, and completing monthly missions to show you what the Fiesta is all about. Recently, I had a chance to sit down with Jason and chat about his movements…his Fiesta Movements.

Jason grew up in a Ford family, his mom drove a Ford Probe and his dad piloted an F-150. Like many of his peers, Jason took that family history of domestic car ownership, set it aside and made his first car a Honda Civic. As those in Ford marketing would say, that kind of behavior is “not optimal.”

How does Ford attract young, hip people such Jason? Well, first Ford has to have the proper hardware to sell to buyers who expect a certain level of style and features in their ride. The sleek looking 2011 Fiesta seems to have those qualities in spades. With that box ticked, Ford has to set out and educate the masses about how hard it has worked to improve its products. Cue an ’80s style movie montage! With no montage readily available, Ford did the next best thing and setup a social marketing program. Ford set out to find 100 social media stars and gave them each a European Ford Fiesta to play with. Applicants for the Fiesta Movement submitted a video telling the Ford team why they’d be a great choice. Ford chose the crème de la crème and after a brief two day orientation sent these so-called “agents” on their merry way with their new Fiestas.

How did Jason find out about the Movement? Now that Jason has now been behind the wheel of his Fiesta for about a month and half, how does he like his car? Hits? Misses? What has been the public’s reaction? Why did Jason almost lose his head to a Yo-Yo? Was another agent’s Fiesta stolen in NYC? All these questions (and more) will be answered in Part II of this series. Stay tuned!

For more info: Check out the Fiesta Movement. Read up on White Menace.

Is the best they can come up with? Treasury's name for new Chrysler: NewCarCo Acquisition LLC

Who knew that they would take this so literally?

The Treasury Department announced on Friday it set up a new company to succeed Chrysler LLC called NewCarCo Acquisition LLC. You won't see this name at your local dealership, but still one has to wonder exactly how much thought the Treasury gave to the name "NewCarCo Acquisition LLC?"

Perhaps inspiration was taken from a new series of ads run by Chrysler which tout "We are building a new car company." NCCA (or whatever it will be called) is based in Wilmington, Del and already has $6.943 billion in its bank account thanks to Uncle Sam.

Fiat 500 to be sold as a Fiat in Chrysler dealerships in about 18 months

Here come the little Italians!

The Fiat 500 will be Fiat/Chrysler's response to the MINI when it arrives in the USA in about one and half year's time. The spunky Italian will be the only car sold as a Fiat according to spokesman Richard Gadeselli.

The Polish built 500 mimics the MINI in many ways, from its retro looks, size and fantastic customization possibilities. In Europe the 500 has 549,000 possible configurations, 11 different colors, 100 accessories, and seven different interior trim choices.

With only 18 months left to wait, American buyers would do well to brush up on their Italian, enjoy a cappuccino and perhaps pickup a diecast model of the 500 on eBay. Since the Fiat/Chrysler union has not yet been fully ratified and the 500 has not officially been announced for the U.S. market, dealers are probably not accepting deposits for the car (you should be wary of any dealership that IS currently taking deposits). However, if you truly have you heart set on this model, you might want to buddy up to your local dealer over the course of the next few months.

For the curious, check out how the 500 is made in this YouTube video (there is no sound).

Publicity stunt? Sure! But who could resist finding a car from their youth? (8/31/09)

We all have a treasured picture of that "first love." Hopefully those shorts stay lost.

In 1984 John Schnatter sold his 1972 Z28 Camaro in order to start building his pizza empire. This move proved much more profitable than my hording of Prince memorabilia around the same time. However, perhaps I have the last laugh as I still have all those picture discs taking up room in my garage while Schnatter is hitting the highways trying to find his Camaro.

No matter, you could collect $25,000 as a finder's fee if you locate said Camaro. Schnatter doesn't have the VIN but hopes to locate the car by using other details. According to the contest rules, you must show proof of official vehicle title stating the names of all past owners, including John Schnatter, and a photo of the Camaro outlined in the contest. You must also include your name, address and phone number for prize receipt consideration.

If you like sleuthing, perhaps this contest is for you. However, if you just want to enter a car related contest, I'd suggest you check out Sandra Grauschopf's about.com repository of car sweepstakes.

Honda CrossTour gets snapped by shutterbug

Recent spy shot of the forthcoming Honda crossover, supposedly called CrossTour

When we first started talking about a new Honda crossover, a lot was made of spyshots showing a European market Accord Tourer mule.

European Accord Tourer

Here is the European market Accord Tourer. A very sharp looking wagon!

Purported Honda CrossTour image shown on Burlapp cars

However, there were those who disagreed that what would be known as the CrossTour would look like the Euro wagon and posted alternate images. Many ridiculed this opinion. Those who posted on Honda fan sites said that the image on Burlapp cars wasn't close, that it was a case of mistaken identitiy with the forthcoming Acura ZDX

Acura ZDX prototype

Now that the cat is out of the bag, it would appear that we have a near doppelganger with the Acura model. Which begs the question, "Are they twins?" Not so fast say some experts. While the cars may be extremely similar in outward appearance, the Honda may use a double wishbone suspension setup whereas the ZDX will use McPherson struts.

One question that has to be asked in general is, "Why the sudden confidence in the hatchback?" History has been unkind to the hatch here in the United States with only a few models getting any traction. Americans seem to like their hatches to be on the back of SUVs and truck-ish looking crossovers and not sedans with a rounded backside. BMW, Acura and Honda seem to be bucking this trend and are launching vehicles that would have been unthinkable in the U.S. market just a few years ago.

Let's get tentative: GM and Magna have reached an agreement in principle

The Magna Carta and has nothing to do with Magna International

Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International believes it may have found a diamond in the rough in GM's European Opel division. Opel has been pursued by several suitors, including a well publicized bid by Fiat. Many in Germany opposed a Fiat link because of concerns that too many jobs would be lost in consolidation efforts. Magna, which currently assembles cars for other manufacturers but does not have a brand to call its own, wants to use Opel to crack into the Russian market.

"We can contribute a lot [to this alliance]," Magna International Inc. founder and Chief Executive Frank Stronach .

Magna has tried to purchase automakers before, most famously with a failed bid for Chrysler but also reportedly tried for Aston Martin Lagonda.

According to Wikipedia, Magna employs 83,000 employees at 240 manufacturing operations in 24 countries around the world. Magna supports these operations with 62 engineering and R&D centers in 14 countries.

Frank Stronach's story of rags to riches has inspired many an entrepreneur. Stronach arrived in Montreal from the Austrian Alps, at age 21 with $200 in cash and suitcase of clothes. Frank began his Canadian adventure peeling potatoes in a hospital kitchen, but quickly moved on to becoming a crafty businessman.

No official announcement from either company has been made at this point.

Nader: 'New GM a 'Death Star' for U.S. jobs'

Ralph Nader compares new GM to the Death Star

Leave it to Ralph Nader to find a catchy phrase to attack the idea of a reorganized General Motors. The longtime watchdog is focusing on the restructuring of the nation's auto makers and the impacts that these moves will have on American workers.

"If GM goes into bankruptcy ... what will be launched would be a conclusive Death Star to tens of thousands of jobs, thousands of small businesses and adverse effects to hundreds of communities around the country. Congress is entitled to ask, 'Does this have to happen?'"--Ralph Nader

As the government's deadline for General Motors draws closer, it is almost certain that GM will declare bankruptcy. Nader's concern is that many jobs will not only be lost when factories close and brands are shuttered, but that production of future U.S. vehicles will be moved to Asia. GM has stated in documents submitted to Congress that it plans to start importing small cars from China starting in 2011, but GM has also stated that it expects the percentage of cars made in the U.S. to remain stable with fewer imports from Canada.

Our electric car future? First MINI E delivered to customer

Think he is headed for electric avenue?

Pacific Palisades resident Peter Trepp has become the first customer to receive a leased all-electric MINI Cooper. The monthly payment on the MINI is a rather steep $850 but that is probably a minimal concern for the venture capitalist specializing in green industries. Just think of all the PR is getting!

According to BMW, the MINI E can travel up to 156 miles before a recharge is necessary. Peter won't be taxing that limit as his office is only 15 miles round trip away.

More manufacturers are creating small test fleets of electric and hydrogen vehicles, attempting to capitalize on a groundswell of eager customers willing to endure the limitations that these vehicles present. Honda has a limited fleet of FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicles and GM has its Project Driveway which is a fleet of fuel cell equipped Chevrolet Equinoxes. These beta customers become ambassadors for the brands, spreading the good word without looking like a corporate shill.

'Hey! You've got carbon fiber in my titanium alloy!' Audi R8 and Ferrari 599 GTB meet by accident

Oopsie! Audi and Ferrari in less the mint condition (photo source: wrecked exotics)

According to the website Wrecked Exotics, this accident occurred on May 25th in Fu Zhou, China when an Audi R8 slammed into the rear of a Ferrari 599 GTB after a taxi suddenly stopped to pick up a passenger. Were the two exotic sports cars traveling together or was this mere happenstance? I don't know the answer to that, but you have to marvel at odds of something like this happening. Neither driver was seriously injured. As for the taxi driver? I'd suggest a vacation, far away from Fu Zhou.

Chrysler bankruptcy: Almost out of the woods?

A very quick hookup for Chrysler and Fiat

In what has been a shock, at least to me, Chrysler's bankruptcy proceedings are humming along at a remarkable pace. We where told at the outset that Chrysler would emerge from its chrysalis by the end of June, but I had as much faith in that prediction as I have in the "Your expected wait time is 5 minutes" announcements when I call customer service: not much.

Now it would appear that the new Chrysler/Fiat partnership will be a reality well before an operator takes my call. While creditors might beg to differ about the benefits of such a quick process, it is great new for the rest of us: Consumer confidence will be boosted, factories can reopen and the healing process can begin in earnest.

GM / Chrysler bankruptcies: What of the victims?

Amanda Dinnigan was left a quadriplegic after an accident

In the case of automaker bankruptcies, the plights of bond and stock holders, dealers, consumers, employees and retirees have been well covered. One group that I hadn't even considered are those who are seeking a judgment against the manufacturer. Perhaps a piece of safety equipment failed or the owner felt that their car's design was not adequate to protect them in a given scenario. Now with Chrysler's bankruptcy and a GM bankruptcy looking all the more likely, claimants are getting very nervous.

"With Chrysler, they're not only seeking to extinguish all the known claims, but also extinguish those cases of injuries and deaths that have occurred but no one has filed a suit yet," said lawyer Larry Coben.

While it is too late for those 300 or so people with a case against Chrysler to avoid their fate as a lowly ranked creditor, there are approximately 1,200 people suing GM and they are feeling the push to reach a settlement before bankruptcy is declared. Of course, there is no guarantee to that those with a settlement will see any money, it would likely be easier for them to recover something as opposed to those who did not settle in time.

I always get a queasy feeling when talking about lawsuits. I have this mental image of people digging for dollars, but we live in an imperfect world and there are valid claims that deserve to be paid. An automotive-related injury can level staggering medical bills and those claimants relying upon a settlement to cover those costs could end up empty handed. There is a move afoot to setup a "victims compensation fund" as was done after 9/11. It's unclear at this time how much traction such an initiative has in Congress.

Ford Fiesta Rallycross to make U.S. debut at Pike's Peak

The new Ford Fiesta may not be hitting the streets of America officially until next year, but high-performance motorsport examples of the car will make their U.S. racing debut this summer when the Olsberg Motor Sport Evolution team from Sweden, managed by Andreas Eriksson, brings two new Fiesta Rallycross cars to compete in the annual Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado on July 19.

“The new Fiesta is an engaging, fun to drive car that is off to a very successful start in Europe and Asia,” said Jim Farley, Group Vice President, Ford Global Marketing and Communications. “Thanks to Andreas Eriksson, we’re able to introduce the Fiesta to racing fans in the U.S. ahead of its launch in 2010.”

The Pike's Peak International Hill Climb dates back to 1916, and is the second oldest motor sports event in America, taking its name from the famous mountain peak that towers above Colorado Springs in the Rocky Mountains and is often referred to as 'The Race to the Clouds'.
Ford cars have been at Pike’s Peak since the very first race in 1916, when four Ford-powered cars competed. In 1922, Ford scored its first victory when Noel Bullock took his 179ci, OHV, 50 hp Ford Special, nicknamed “Tin Lizzy” by the other competitors, to a surprise victory in the time of 19:50.9.

The two Fiestas will be driven by Eriksson and rally legend Marcus Grönholm in the ‘Unlimited Class’ at Pike’s Peak, in an attempt to be the first team to break the 10-minute mark over the 12.4-mile, 156-turn pavement and gravel course.

Ford Motor Company's director of Global Motorsport Business Development, Jost Capito, said: "The Pike's Peak event is another step forward for the new Ford Fiesta as a core vehicle in Ford's future global motorsport aspirations. We're looking forward to seeing Andreas and Marcus in action on this unique event."

The Olsbergs MSE Fiesta Rallycross car is based on both the Fiesta hatchback model road cars. The all-wheel-drive Fiestas are powered by a 2.0-liter Duratec Ford engine capable of more than 800 horsepower.

Incestuous relationship? Ford delivers its 1,000,000 Microsoft SYNC equipped vehicle to Microsoft

This picture offers a vista of the SYNC system in action. Yes, I worked hard for this pun.

The huge impact that the SYNC system has had for Ford cannot be overstated. Talk about a killer app. Ford has shown the industry that technology, priced competitively, can motivate buyers. Ford executive Mark Fields has said that Ford models equipped with Sync sell twice as fast as the same cars without Sync. I have been extremely impressed with SYNC since it first entered the marketplace. It has only gotten better since then.

Hyundai/Kia will be offering SYNC-like technology in the near future. Fiat also uses Microsoft technology, called Blue & Me, in its vehicles. I expect Blue & Me to make its way into the new Chrysler/Fiat lineup.

----------------------------------------

The popularity of Ford SYNC® reached a new milestone today, as Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally delivered Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer his new 2010 Fusion Hybrid equipped with the 1 millionth SYNC system, which is powered by Microsoft Auto software.

“We have made a commitment to deliver the vehicles that people really want and value,” Mulally said. “The success of SYNC is another proof point that we are doing just that. We will continue to innovate and expand the capability of SYNC by integrating even more new technologies that fit our customers’ lifestyles.”

SYNC is Ford’s fully integrated, voice-activated, in-car communications and entertainment system for mobile phones and digital music players. Since its debut in 2007 on the Ford Focus, SYNC has continued to gain in popularity. More than 80 percent of the vehicles Ford sells in North America are equipped with the system.

Like other advanced hardware and software solutions, SYNC continues to expand its applications. In 2008, SYNC was upgraded with two new applications, Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist™, and more are on the way.

Ford’s latest SYNC application, Traffic, Directions and Information, will be available for download this summer. It will provide simple hands-free access to personalized traffic reports, precise driving directions and up-to-date information including business listings, news, sports scores and weather.

“Working with Microsoft and other key technology partners, we’ve made Ford the connectivity leader in the auto industry,” said Jim Buczkowski, director of electrical and electronic systems. “We do not plan to stand still; we have several additional developments in the pipeline, including launching SYNC in Europe and around the world.”

The 1 millionth SYNC equipped vehicle, a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, is only fitting, because the all-new sedan is the new benchmark in midsized sedans. The 2010 Fusion Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient midsize car in America, with a certified 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, topping the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway.

Ford Fiesta DNA: Do Not Adjust

Ford Fiesta

The black Fiesta stood out like a shiny new penny on the sidewalk. The car certainly was striking, but it really popped because it wasn't where it was supposed to be. I was a bit lost, walking the neighborhoods of San Francisco trying to navigate a steeplechase of barriers that had been erected the night before in preparation for Carnavale San Francisco. Every street I turned down was impassible and I had to keep falling back further and further. Making matters worse, I was low on caffeine and under dressed for a cold, drizzly San Francisco day. I looked like freakin' tourist with my shorts and my SLR hanging around my neck. Then out of nowhere, in a flash of black and chrome, there was a Fiesta--the first one I have seen in the wild. It looked European, sleek and very much at home in our City by the Bay. I fumbled to turn my camera on, but it was too late, the car was gone.

I finally made it to my destination and was greeted by one of the local members of the Fiesta Movement tour. I had prepared an entire list of questions for the Ford team to answer, but it became clear early on that these questions would not be answered. The Ford team either did not know the answers or they were not at liberty to discuss. In exchange for question and answer, I was handed a fact sheet. U.S. pricing is estimated to be in the $15,000 range, fuel mileage will be approximately 40MPG, the Fiesta will be assembled in Cuautitlan, Mexico and the target demographics include people between the ages of 16-31 who want a car that expresses who they are and makes them stand out in a crowd. There, now you know what I know.

The real crux of this story isn't facts or figures, however, it's about a little car and big aspirations. The Ford team was generous with their time and pretty much gave me free reign over the test drive route. We took the lime green hatchback all over town and out onto the freeway. From my time behind the wheel, I can tell you that the little Fiesta offers a comfortable ride, crisp handling and zippy performance when mated to a manual transmission. The interior plastics are soft to the touch and the cabin has a general feeling of being one or two notches above in MSRP from where it will actually retail. Of course, this is where things get tricky. The is NOT the U.S. version of the Fiesta. The car I drove was built in Germany for the European market. Ford simply got a waiver from the government to bring over a boat load of these cars for testing. The concern is, what will Ford do to this little cherry of a car in the process of federalizing it? Of course there a minor adjustments for emissions and safety requirements, but the real worry is that Ford will mess with other components either to save costs or theoretically make the Fiesta more appealing to Americans.

Last July, I reached out to Said Deep, Ford North America and Global Product Communications Manager, about the U.S. Fiesta. I want to clarify at the outset that because these products are a ways off, we did not discuss specifics, but rather spoke in generalities about consumer expectations and true “parts sharing.” My first concern was regarding interior plastics. Speaking to different trim pieces, Said stated “If it’s not the same part number, then it's not really parts sharing.” That would mean that for a supplier to truly reap the benefits of volume production, they need to know that they can tap into global demand—be it here in the U.S., Asia or Europe. Tack on a few hundred thousand extra dash panels and suddenly the price per unit drops for all units sold. That statement implied to me that Ford will keeps its mitts off the nice trim pieces. Of course, that was July 2008 and a lot has happened since then. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

What about all the fancy gadgets? In the past, European small cars have been chock-full of wondrous options that are only offered on premium vehicles here in the U.S. The argument went that U.S. customers simply would not pay the extra money for such features, so why offer them? This attitude is changing rapidly. People downsizing from a loaded SUVs are expecting to find all the great features, such as navigation, backup camera, leather, etc, they had in their old vehicles in their new rides. Ford is seeing a lot of showroom interest in smaller vehicles laden with content. This is important because it gives Ford a good feeling about offering even more premium content, which in turn will boost the average transaction price upwards and subsequently will increase dealership and manufacturer profits. If you need any confirmation of how hungry Americans are for well-equipped small cars, just hop on over to Mini’s site and equip a Cooper with all the options. You can easily add 50% to the cost of the vehicle by throwing on all sorts of premium features. How’s that working out for Mini? Pretty darn well if you look at their sales history in the U.S. market. Of course, Ford will tailor each car to the local market in which it is being sold. However, it seems that Ford does “get it” and won’t be stripping out the Euro-interiors and installing “Tempo chic” hard and shiny plastic interiors with limited options availability. Will every option that is offered in Europe be offered in sister vehicles offered here? There will be exceptions, of that I’m sure, but Said did offer up that any options offered in Europe will be in Ford’s bag of tricks and could easily be offered on our cars should Ford sense demand for them. One American feature that I'll be looking for is Ford's Sync system. The Fiesta team would not commit to the U.S. Fiesta having this feature, but I think its safe to say that Sync will be offered.

I asked the Ford team what the general reaction to the Fiesta had been. As you might expect, the answer they gave me was enthusiastic. Given the quality of the car, I don't find this hard to believe. Ford reps said that almost all participants are telling the team that Ford should leave the Fiesta "as is" and not meddle with its DNA. In fact, that's where I got this article's headline, from a participant who told Ford that when it comes to the Euro-spec Fiesta, DNA should stand for "Do Not Adjust." The Ford team collects all of these suggestions and files a daily report with corporate. This bolsters the argument even further that Ford is getting the message loud and clear: don't cheap out on this car. We can only hope that this is the case.

GM: ‘We have new engine technology that combusts without a spark!’ Richard Pryor: ‘Big deal'

Pryor lit himself on fire well before HCCI

As Triumph the Comic Insult Dog would say, “I keed, I keed.” The groundbreaking comic is not speaking from the grave and homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is actually a pretty big deal. As you may know, diesel engines are more efficient than equivalent gasoline engines. A good rule of thumb is that all things being equal, a diesel engine will provide roughly a thirty percent boost in fuel economy over its gasoline counterpart. Diesel engines operate differently than gasoline engines in that they ignite the air/fuel mixture without the aid of a traditional spark-generated flame. You might be familiar with ‘dieseling’ gasoline engines continuing to run after the key has been turned off. In fact, a dieseling gasoline engine is not using compression to ignite the fuel but rather a hot spot in the cylinder, but the concept is the similar: there is no spark igniting the mixture.

What HCCI does is try to mimic a diesel engine by using heat and pressure to ignite the air/fuel mixture. HCCI’s efficiency comes from reduced pumping losses, burning fuel faster at lower temperatures and reducing the heat energy lost during the combustion process. Consequently, less carbon dioxide is released because the engine’s operation in HCCI mode is more efficient. Plus you don’t get a nasty smell on your hands or unwilling have to consort with truckers at the diesel pumps (I say unwillingly because I know that there are folks who willingly consort with truckers at truck stops, not that there is anything wrong with that).

During HCCI mode, the engine approaches the efficiency of a diesel, but unlike a diesel, it requires only a conventional exhaust system. Diesel engines require more elaborate and more expensive exhaust “aftertreatment” to reduce emissions. So HCCI gives you fuel economy that rivals a diesel for a fraction of the cost, sounds great, right? The problem is, conditions have to be optimal and a sophisticated engine management system has to ride herd over the whole setup or you’ll end up sounding something like this. An HCCI engine starts up using a spark ignition and runs that way until the motor is at the proper temperature when it then switches over to compression ignition. Drivers who have had some seat time in HCCI equipped vehicles report that the transition between HCCI and spark ignition is audible but otherwise seamless. What GM is trying to do is expand the operating range that HCCI can work under so that efficiency can be maximized.

Keep your eyes peeled for HCCI as it has the potential to be a game changer. GM isn’t the only company working on HCCI, rest assured it’s an industry wide preoccupation. Undoubtedly HCCI, especially when combined with other fuel saving technology, will deliver us to the promised land of wondrous fuel economy without regressing to Pinto levels of acceleration.

San Francisco: Test drive the Ford Fiesta before everybody else

Jason says "Hey, How you doin?"

If you have any interest in peppy small cars, then you'll want to head on down to 19th and Harrison today (Saturday) and Sunday to check out the Ford Fiesta. This is actually a special treat for us because the car will not be on sale in the U.S. until the summer of 2010 as a 2011 model. You are getting a sneak peak into the future courtesy of Ford.

Since the North American cars are not yet in production, the vehicles featured in the "Fiesta Movement" are actually built at Ford's Cologne, Germany facility. While the representatives cannot get into specifics of American vehicles and how they'll be equipped, you can get a sense of what we are going to get.

This is an initial report, rushed out the door so that you will have plenty of time to check out the Fiesta for yourself. I will post a more detailed report later on in the weekend. For now all you need to know is 19th and Harrison. Keep in mind that it is Carnavale so you will have to park a few blocks away from the event. Ford reps are on hand from approximately 10AM to 5PM on both Saturday and Sunday. The Fiesta team will also be roaming around various locations of SF on Monday before heading to Los Angeles.

For more info: Check out the Fiesta Movement!

WWPD? What would Penske do...If he bought Saturn?

Samsung eMX (SM3) concept

Now that GM has given its Saturn division walking papers, outside investors are trying to come up with creative ways to use the relatively well known and respected brand. One such investor is Roger Penske, a crafty creative retailer who brought the smart fortwo to the U.S. market. Penske has always been an intelligent businessman with his only real stumble being his failed alliance with Kmart to offer auto maintenance. Yeah, that didn't work so well.

Okay, so Penske is interested in Saturn. What would he do with it? Word on the street is that he'd sell Samsung cars and crossovers. It's not as outlandish as you might think. Samsung is largely owned by Renault -Nissan and uses corporate underpinnings for its vehicles. The corporate parts sharing should make the Samsung vehicles easily adaptable to US regulations. In the most basic sense, this would make these vehicles cut-rate Nissans. I say in the most basic sense because I'm sure there are those out there who would dig into the minutia and pick a fight with me on this analogy, but on the Internet you can find people to argue with you over just about anything. The pictured car (above) is essentially the 2010 SM3 with some auto show fluff on it. The 2010 SM3 is based on the Renault Mégane which was recently redesigned itself. Now of course I am only speculating that the SM3 would be one of the vehicles that Penske would offer here.

Another Samsung model that Penske might import would be the QM5. This crossover is related to the Renault Koleos, Nissan Qashqai and Nissan Rogue. While not a stunner, it's pleasant enough to look at and I'm sure it could sell in reasonable numbers at a the right price. There are two other Samsung models, the SM5 and SM7, both sedans based off the Nissan Teana.

Right now we're playing "what ifs" as nothing is finalized and there are other bidders for Saturn. However, out of all the interested parties that I know of, I'd trust Roger Penske and his team the most. Penske has a proven automotive retailing background with more hits than misses. If I were a Saturn dealer, I'd be rooting for Roger.

My only request of Mr. Penske? If you end up with the Saturn network, please give these vehicles a decent warranty and NOT a two year warranty like you currently offer on the smart. I doubt Mr. Penske would be foolish enough to undercut warranty coverage on mainstream cars like these, but I thought I'd throw it out there just in case anyone was getting ideas.

Only the nose knows? 2010 Acura MDX??

Jeff Palmer over at the Temple of VTEC checked his e-mail yesterday, he found a couple of renderings of 2010 Acuras from an anonymous tipster. As you can see, the MDX appears to be set for for a TL inspired nose. For comparison's sake, I have placed a photo of the current MDX as an inset into the picture. For a better view of the 2009 MDX, click over to Acura's official website.

Jeff also has a picture of what the 2010 RDX might look like. I don't want to steal all of his thunder, so I'll point you over to his post for the actual picture.

Standard caveats apply here. These pictures could be total BS for all we know. Acura and Honda won't confirm or deny the veracity of the images. However, even if they were done by some kid with overactive Photoshop skills, it would stand to reason that Acura's crossovers will receive the family schnoz. Don't forget that the MDX/RDX will shortly be joined by the ZDX (shown in prototype form).

Mmm...Structural sandwich

The CTS-V is Cadillac's barnstormer, with enough horsepower and torque (556 horsepower, 551 lb/ft.) to pull my imaginary boat over the steepest mountain pass.

During the construction of the hood, the inner and outer portions of the hood are fused together and then sealed with a rolling hem, which allows for high-precision and quality along the edge. After the hood construction is complete, a personalized quality check is performed to ensure the hood meets the Cadillac's standards. The assembled car is then driven to my house where I personally check it before it is shipped to the dealer.

Okay, I made that last part up.

If only all Buick buyers were this passionate

The new Buick Regal is a nice looking car, but c'mon! Car dealers here in the U.S. would love to have demand like this. Walk into a showroom and its "Name your price, just please buy a car!" Apparently this young lady never listened to the Rolling Stones, because she clearly gets wants she wants.

Unofficial GM dealership closing lists pop up like mushrooms after a rainstorm

Unlike Chrysler, the list of GM dealerships receiving notification that their agreements will not be renewed has not been made public. I speculate that that there are several reason for this. Firstly, GM has not set an absolute "drop dead date" like Chrysler did, instead promising an orderly wind down. Nothing kills business like the news that you'll soon be out of business so GM probably didn't want to poison the well for its dealerships' sales prospects. GM is also allowing for an appeals process, so while the chances are slim, there a small sliver of hope that some dealers now on the list might get a reprieve. Of course, for those dealerships that know they are okay, there is a cloud of speculation that unfairly casts its shadow over their stores and what of the consumer, should they be kept in the dark? GM should commit to making the list public after the appeals process is complete.

Nature abhors a vacuum and when did a lack of facts ever stop anyone on the Internet from posting something? Therefore, I offer to you several lists of GM dealership closings that may be as accurate as a two dollar watch, but they are the best we have at the moment:

Let's hear from a happy dealer

There is more doom and gloom in the auto industry then there is in my kitchen before I've had my morning coffee. It's understandable, people are losing jobs and in this economy there its hard to simply tell yourself you'll find another job tomorrow.

The Detroit Free Press had a nice article about Bill Wink Chevrolet in Dearborn, Michigan. Instead of receiving a "Dear John" letter from GM the dealership found out that it was safe.
While no one is out of the woods yet, it's a pleasure to take a step back and enjoy a happy moment.

Transit Connect heads to showrooms with a base of $21,475

Right-sized delivery vehicles are just one way that we can achieve better efficiencies in our transportation network. Below is the press release from Ford announcing the MSRP of the Transit Connect and the availability of an electric model with a ~100 mile range.

Ford is tapping its global portfolio of products to meet the unique needs of American small-business owners with the 2010 Transit Connect, a spacious new fuel-efficient alternative to larger commercial vehicles that’s ideal for navigating U.S. cities.

“Transit Connect is a tangible success of our ‘One Ford’ strategy to harness the best of our global products and offer new choices and solutions to customers in other parts of the world,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas.

“With 40 percent market share, Ford is the reigning Commercial Truck leader in the United States, and we’re looking for Transit Connect to further grow our leadership and allow even more customers to experience the ‘Built Ford Tough’ difference.”

Transit Connect arrives with a global reputation for durability and toughness dating back to its 2003 launch, when an expert jury of European commercial vehicle journalists named it International Van of the Year.

Ford Transit Connect is built on a dedicated front-wheel drive commercial vehicle platform to meet and exceed the needs of small-business owners and entrepreneurs. To prepare Transit Connect for United States duty, the powertrain was upgraded to include a proven Duratec 2.0-liter dual-overhead cam (DOHC) I-4 engine – giving 22 city, 25 highway miles per gallon – and a four-speed automatic overdrive transaxle. Several design details, including the grille and interior touches, have been updated to lend the vehicle a fresh, new look for its American debut.

As part of Ford’s aggressive new electric vehicle plan to bring pure battery-powered vehicles, hybrids and plug-in hybrids to market, a battery electric-powered Transit Connect will be offered later in 2010. The Transit Connect battery electric vehicle will be the initial offering in Ford’s recently announced electrification initiatives.

Ford is working with Smith Electric Vehicles, the European market’s leading battery electric upfitter of commercial vehicles, a part of the U.K.-based Tanfield Group of companies. Since 1920, Smith has converted tens of thousands of commercial vehicles to battery electric-power.

Many commercial users travel predictable, short-range routes, with lots of stop and go in urban and suburban environments. A range of up to 100 miles makes the battery electric-powered Transit Connect a useful hauler, with significantly reduced operation and maintenance costs. For companies aiming for sustainable mobility solutions, it can help them deliver the goods in an environmentally friendly way.

2009 Goodguys Get-Together headed for Alameda Co. Fairgrounds May 30-31

When I used to hear about the Goodguys hot rod events, I always thought it was somehow related to the electronics retailer. It doesn't. Now, it's very common for me to get things wrong. For example, for years I thought that Alaska Airlines had a picture of Abraham Lincoln on its tail, not an Eskimo. I am now aware that the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association has nothing to do the defunct retailer and NO I didn't just learn that on Wikipedia.

Coming up at the end of the month, the sixteenth annual Summer Get-Together, will be held at Pleasanton's Alameda County Fairgrounds. Be there or be clueless like me.

Justin over an Minyanville sent me a link to this clip and I've decided (perhaps against my better judgment given the number of Detroit readers I have) to embed the video here.

Now, I want to make a couple of things clear. The Detroit of today is not the Detroit of yesterday and no I'm not talking about downtown which is sadly an entirely different story. I'm talking about American cars in general and the fact that they have immensely improved. I recommend many Ford and GM vehicles to friends and family without fear of retribution once they have placed these vehicles in their driveway.

However, every now and then we have to have fun and let's face it Chrysler and Fiat have both had quality woes. One does have to wonder at least a little bit how well these new models are going to hold together. Of course, this video highlights the worst of the worst, but it's all in good fun.

For the record, I was and still am in favor of a Chrysler/Fiat union.

Okay, enough disclaimers, let's all have a laugh.

Chrysler and Fiat: Can a quarter plus a half equal a whole?

While much hoopla has been made about Fiat injecting fresh product into Chrysler’s depleted portfolio, the problem for Chrysler remains that small cars currently only account for 14 percent of the entire U.S. light vehicle market. The bulk of sales are larger cars and Fiat cannot provide immediate assistance in this area. That means that Chrysler will have to find other ways to stay current in the largest market segments without any Fiat cash. To date we know that a new Jeep Grand Cherokee is coming and a refreshed 300C will follow, but how will Chrysler manage updates to its minivan and Ram pickup? The answer probably lies with our own government, big surprise, as it is the only entity willing to pony up the cash.

What will work in Chrysler’s favor is that it will have few dealers to feed and subsequently greater volume in each remaining store. Also, the development and tooling costs for the minivan and pickup with be amortized out shortly, in fact I would venture that the minivan is almost all the way there already, meaning great a greater profit per unit. Still I am afraid that we the people will be on the hook in the short term until Fiat and Chrysler can sync up. In my estimation, that means the earliest we can expect relief would be 2012, unless fuel prices skyrocket again and smaller cars take a larger piece of the pie.

Nissan: Diesel Maxima in "Holding pattern" Next Quest "Will look very different"

In a recent interview with Automotive News, Nissan North America's senior VP of sales and marketing, Brian Carolin, said that the current economic crisis has placed the diesel Maxima on hold. In addition the next Quest minivan will be a much changed product with a sharper focus on what the market wants. Infiniti is looking at less expensive models, but nothing firm at this point while on the upper end there is currently no plan for a new flagship to replace the extinct Q45. Nissan has signed off on the final design of the next Titan pickup, which will be assembled by Chrysler.

You want how much? Ferrari may go for over $16 million

Holy value meal, Batman! A 1957 250 Testa Rossa may fetch over 12 million euros ($16.4 million) at auction this Sunday, May 17 according to the firm RM Auctions.

“The great thing about Ferraris is that they appeal to novice collectors as well as specialists,” Simon Kidston, a Geneva-based classic-car adviser, said in a telephone interview. “They’re not difficult cars to understand.” Apparently they also appeal to suckers, because in this author's humble opinion, no car is worth $16.4 million, except perhaps my Sienna minivan if you happen to be interested in buying it.

Due to the special nature of this car, RM Auctions has prepared a video clip (embedded below) and uploaded it to YouTube. Unfortunately, the soundtrack to the video is so annoying, it makes me want to pay less for the car. Perhaps I will now only offer the aforementioned minivan, a thousand bucks in cash and an old outboard motor from my sailboating days.

Some folks might recall that the May 17 auction, to be held in Italy, will also see the sale of the last production Ferrari F430. I have covered that vehicle in a separate post, "But honey, it was for charity" which you can read by clicking here.

For all I know, this car might be a great investment. I'm not a classic car collector and my knowledge of the scene is limited to what I have learned from watching Barrett-Jackson on Speed TV. It would still seem to me that you would be better served by purchasing 16, $1 million dollar cars than sinking all that money into one roll of the dice.

What does the closure of 789 Chrysler dealers look like?

When you read about 789 Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealerships closing, I think it's rather easy to become overwhelmed. The NY Times has mapped out where all of the 789 dealerships are and you can visit the NY Times article to interact with a map.

As they always say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Each one of those red flags represents a place of employment, livelihoods that will now be upended. When you consider that GM has now send out 1,124 such rejection letters to dealers around the country, the map becomes even more incomprehensible.

As a recap, some of the dealers that we'll be losing in the SF Bay Area include:

  • PENINSULA DODGE in Redwood City (this doesn't really count, they are already closed)
  • BOARDWALK CHRYSLER PLYMOUTH JEEP (Redwood City)
  • BAY BRIDGE CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE (Oakland)
  • LIVERMORE CHRYSLER JEEP
  • BURLINGAME CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE
  • SERRAMONTE CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE (Colma)

Hoax! There is no $15,500 Ford Fusion Hybrid

My e-mail box overflows with press releases. It seems that pretty much every hour of the working day, someone, somewhere wants to announce something. Some items are big, such as the Chrysler dealer announcement yesterday, and then there are some releases like this one from Ford.

Ford wants you to know that the is no truth to a recent e-mail that it is offering the $27,700 Fusion Hybrid for $15,500. The presser goes on to say, "But as long as we’re talking about the Ford Fusion Hybrid, we’ll take this opportunity to pass along some things that are true." Nice.

While I am dubious about the actual public service this press release provides, I am covering it in the off chance that someone has received this e-mail and believes it to be true. Providing this service doesn't make me Batman, but I try to help Gotham whenever I can.

Truck pulling event allows women to compete. In other news wife says I don't even pull my own weight

Nothing like a truck pulling contest to bring men and women together. Three Israeli women took part in a five year old truck pulling event, a first for their gender.

Having done a lot of stupid things in my high school days, I can attest that even pulling a pickup truck is a challenge, let alone a 7 1/2 ton truck.

However, we here in the Bay Area should not worry about our pride, for we have someone who possess even a greater ability. I'm talking about Grandmaster Tu Jin-Sheng of Fremont, best known for his Iron Crotch, who has the ability to pull a truck with his privates (slightly NSFW due to the P word, but otherwise not objectionable).

Traffic Lights Are So Overrated: London Borough of Ealing Temporarily Aces Signals

The humble traffic signal, so simple in its design and yet so complex in its nature: Green means go, yellow means speed up and red means a ticket if you get caught. We've all done it, asses the actual color of the light. How green is that signal? Did it just turn? Is that yellow fresh or about to become red?

What if one day they all disappeared? The London Borough of Ealing seems to think that intersections without lights might actually improve things by causing people to slow down, look and listen. Personally I predict pandemonium. I don't know about you, but I've seen how people act when the power goes out and the signals stop working. It's not pretty folks, it's downright scary. The timid become even more hesitant, gumming up the works while the brash simply barge ahead without much regard to who was actually there first. That leaves us good drivers to sort out the mess. Show me a failed signal and I'll show you a traffic queue that stretches for blocks.

But what the heck do I know? Ben Hamilton Baillie, a transport consultant who has studied schemes on the Continent where lights have been removed, said that traffic flow and safety tended to improve. I wonder if Mr. Hamilton has driven in Belgium?

Whatever the case, I'll be interested to hear how successful Ealing is with its campaign to turn out the lights.

What can brown do for you? UPS delivering rejection letters to 789 Chrysler dealers

Well at least they didn't text them the letter. Still I imagine that every Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer out there is cringing when the see a UPS truck pull up to their door.
Actually, we already have the list of dealers that Chrysler wants to cut, I refer you to Exhibit A (It really is called Exhibit A, I'm not making that up).

The cut represents 24.7 percent of Chrysler's dealer network in the United States. This action would create about four million orphan owners. Chrysler says it will send letters to impacted owners to let them know about the situation. The last day of business for these dealers will be June 9.

For Bay Area residents, I'll make it easy on you. Here's the list of dealers that will be cut. The only caveat is that this list is the result of my PDF searching skills and my judgment as to which towns I consider to be in the Bay Area. I refer you to Exhibit A (I just can't stop saying that) for a complete count.

PENINSULA DODGE in Redwood City (this doesn't really count, they are already closed)
BOARDWALK CHRYSLER PLYMOUTH JEEP (Redwood City)
BAY BRIDGE CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE (Oakland)
LIVERMORE CHRYSLER JEEP
BURLINGAME CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE

Please note: UPS is a fine company and its delivery drivers are professionals. I am sure that they would not open a package and eat your cookies. It should also be noted that UPS delivers many "non-rejection" letters every day and even an occasional fruit cake during the holidays. The fact that Chrysler chose them to deliver bad news should not reflect poorly upon either UPS or its drivers.

Leapin' Leipzig: Porsche Panamera Starts Production

Bay area drivers love Porsche, so it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing the new Panamera sedan prowling our highways and byways soon enough. I mention the Panamera today because it just started production at Porsche's Leipzig facility.

Feelings are mixed about the sedan, with some folks less than taken with its backside. I pretty much split opinion down the middle, as I think the car look much better than the Cayenne SUV but far less sensual that the Cayman sports car. The rather awkward roof life is a result of Porsche's desire to provide a habitable back seat. Given the price of this car, the back seat is probably the only place I would be sitting in so kudos to Porsche for making it roomy. Is the Panamera all that it could have been? No, but let's face it, it could have been far worse.

As with any Porsche, you had better have saved up your pennies. The Panamera starts at $89,900 and quickly rises from there. The top of the line Turbo model starts at $132,600 before any options are added.

For more information check out Porsche USA's website or if you are interested in taking a factory tour in Germany visit the Leipzig facility's web page.

Isetta Stone

AutoExpress thinks that a future generation of Isettas might look like this rendering. Sure is cute as a bug, isn't it? Of course, any such vehicle would have to have eco-cred with a full range of fuel sipping powertrains. While an Isetta could arrive in Europe as soon as 2011, I'm more sceptical about when and if we'll see it here. While it is true that BMW has had great success with its Mini brand, I'm sure it will actively watch how the flood of smaller cars that are headed our way fare in our marketplace before it makes any plans to bring it here. Sure is fun to speculate, though, isn't it?

Don't worry, I have the perfect plan: buy a Mini Cooper today, trade it in for a Fiat 500 and then you'll be ready to trade the 500 for the Isetta. Or maybe by then you'll be so sick of small cars that you'll buy a minivan.

"But Honey, It Was For Charity" Ferrari Auctions Off Last F430

The Italian stallion is stepping up to the plate (or should I say gate) with its efforts to assist citizens of the Abruzzo region that was devastated during the April 6th earthquake in Italy. Ferrari will auction off the very last F430 to roll off the assembly line. The 490hp F430 will come with a special two-tone paint job using the traditional colors (red and blue) of Aquila, the city hardest hit by the earthquake.

In actuality, only the "rights" to the car will be auctioned off at this Sunday’s annual Ferrari: Leggenda e Passione auction, an event that celebrates the automotive legacy of Enzo Ferrari and the passion of the Ferrari enthusiast. The car itself will not be built until the end of the year.

You can find out more about the May 17 auction by visiting the RM Auctions website.
