Next generation C-MAX nabbed! Focus in on this future US bound Ford

Ford Iosis MAX concept from Geneva show source:ford

As mentioned in previous coverage of Ford's plans for 2010 and beyond, the United States will almost certainly be receiving a copy of the Ford of Europe C-MAX people mover.

The current generation model (click to view gallery) is a bit of a snore, but looking at the racey lines of the Iosis Max concept, this look a lot more promising.

We will see the production version of the next generation Focus-based C-MAX at September's Frankfurt Motor Show, but why wait until then? AutoExpress has a whole cache of camouflaged C-MAX mules on the road!

What is unclear as far as the US is concerned is which models we'll get. More than likely, the US will only get a 5 seater but who knows, maybe Ford will pull a Kia Rondo and give a seven seater as well.

2010 Suzuki Kizashi production sedan revealed: Reaching a sales Accord?

2010 Suzuki Kizashi (source: suzuki)

Kizashi 3 concept (source: suzuki)

Last month, Suzuki sales in the US were down a breathtaking 78 percent and its overall decline for the first half of 2009 was 60 percent: The market’s worst loss. That kind of bloodshed has led some analysts to recommend that Suzuki bail on the US auto market entirely.

Suzuki isn’t ready to give up, however, as it has just launched the 2010 Kizashi (pronounced “Kee-Zah-Shee”) sedan.

Click to view a gallery of 2010 Suzuki Kizashi photos.

Why does the worst need another Accord, Camry, Malibu, Fusion, Mazda6, Altima , etc. competitor? Because variety is the spice of life my friends. So what is this Kizashi all about? Well its name supposedly means “Something great is coming.” That’s nice but what else is unique? Well, that is where we get into “marketing speak.” According to Suzuki, the Kizashi has a “Unique blend of dynamic performance attributes with premium design aesthetics and craftsmanship yet to be experienced in this category.”

The 2010 Kizashi is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine. The engine employs both an aluminum block and cylinder heads. The engine is connected to a six-speed manual transmission. Customers may opt for an available Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that delivers both the driving experience and fuel efficiency.

Available premium leather is supplemented by three-stage heated seats and a three-position memory program. In addition, both cloth and leather seats benefit from Suzuki’s attention to detail: French seams, hard cover rears and low fatigue foam. There is a standard keyless push start system, Kizashi also offers iPod® connectivity and optional streaming audio via Bluetooth®. For your advanced listening pleasure, Rockford Fosgate®3 provides an optional listening experience boosted by 425 watts of power.

There are eight airbags standard, Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, projector beam headlamps and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Kizashi is offered with Suzuki’s next generation i-AWD system, a rare option in its class, as this safety and performance enhancing feature is more typically found among luxury sport sedan offerings. Engineered to provide outstanding traction in inclement weather, the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system also delivers enhanced cornering capabilities. Activated when the driver selects the “AWD” switch on the instrument panel, power to the rear wheels starts immediately upon acceleration. Torque split remains dependent on several factors, including wheel slippage and throttle input.

The 2010 Kizsashi is scheduled to arrive in North American showrooms this winter, likely priced in the high teens to mid-twenties.

Hatched: Audi adds to the four door coupe nest with the A5 Sportback

Audi A5 Sportback (source: audi)

There is nothing like a hot, new trend to get automotive designers excited. It seems that the very second one company finds a slightly unique new body design that resounds with customers, all the competing brands shout “Niche!” and run to the design studio to come up with their own offering.

Click to view the slideshow to examine the A5 Sportback from all angles.

So it has been with the very stylish Mercedes CLS which is a less functional sedan or a more functional coupe depending on whether you like your glass of water half full or half empty. Volkswagen responded to the CLS by saying “We can do that for about half the sticker!” and the Volkswagen CC was born. BMW has responded with the 5 Series GT which offers more practical, wagon replacement styling. Porsche has the über expensive Panamera for those drivers who feel the need to terrify three passengers seated in relative comfort. Now Audi has now taken the wraps off the A5 Sportback because you can’t have a German dog pile without every German dog on the pile.

Reviews of the Sportback have been favorable, but then again when was the last time you read a negative review of an Audi?

You can lust all you want for this car, but Audi says its only for looking, not touching here in the USA. Edmunds says that it has something to do with headliner thickness and U.S. crash regulations. Bah, humbug! I’m sure that Audi could change its tune if the exchange rates are favorable and this segment takes off. If nothing else, take comfort in the fact if this particular Sportback won’t be offered here in the States that means that the A6 wagon is probably safe. This is not the same scenario over at BMW where the company is letting it slip that if Americans are drawn to the 5 Series GT hatch it could be curtains for the 5 wagon in the USA. This would be most unwelcomed news, so as far is this author is concerned the Germans can keep their swoopy hatches if it threatens the survival of the more practical wagons.

Kia: Hamsters will not define us! Forte sedan will not feature rodents

No Energizer bunnies: Kia Hamsters are 1 and done

While Kia has received a mountain of favorable press for its Kia Soul hamster spot created by the David&Goliath agency, the only hamsters you’ll be seeing in the brand’s new Forte sedan are the ones that customers have chosen to transport.

Click this linke for a slideshow of 2010 Kia Forte images, both inside and out.

Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing for Kia USA, told BNET Auto “We didn’t want the hamsters to become the spokesperson for our brand. We wanted to be a more serious brand.”

Because that’s what you buyers want, more seriousness? While Kia undoubtedly doesn’t want an Energizer bunny on its hands, using a playful character that has resounded with buyers doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. Have you seen the actual 2010 Kia Forte commercial? It’s a bit of a snore fest.

It's a Kia, people, not a Mercedes, so why not keep it fun and friendly?

2010 Acura MDX photos and features: Part II, The wrath of the shield

2010 Acura MDX dash (source: acura)

This Part II in a two part series.

In order for the 2010 Acura MDX to stay in the game, Acura had to give its crossover more than a dollop of technology. Acura’s models have lead in the field of navigation integration with traffic and weather updates. However, up unitl now the MDX was unable to serve up safety enhancements like Collision Mitigating Braking System™ and a blind spot information system. The new Advance Package takes care of that situation. For those folks in hot climates, the Advance Package also throws in ventilated seats. Boo, hiss that such a feature has been bundled with what will undoubtedly be a pricey package.

Click this link for a gallery of 2010 Acura MDX interior images.

The 2010 MDX sports an EPA estimated city/highway fuel mileage of 16/21 mpg which is an improvement of 1 mpg city and 1 mpg highway over the 2009 model. This is possible thanks to a brand-new Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission along with a new multi-clutch torque converter. With comparatively “short” gearing in the first five forward gears, acceleration is enhanced— while fuel efficiency and quiet cruising are optimized with a relaxed Sixth gear ratio. The 2010 MDX also receives a newly refined 3.7L V-6 develops 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque to provide immediate throttle response, outstanding low- and mid-range torque and excellent high-rpm power. To widen the powerband while simultaneously improving fuel efficiency, the latest 3.7-liter engine has the patented Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) system applied to the intake valves, revised high-lift camshaft specs during VTEC® operation, a computer controlled dual-stage induction system and an electronic Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system.

Overall, the 2010 MDX seems like a very nice improvement over the existing model. Acura didn’t just fiddle with the grille and taillights, there are some serious improvements and added capabilities. Remind me again who needs the Acura ZDX? Given the added functionality of seating seven over Lexus’ five seater RX, Acura has a very competitive entry. Now, I’m ready for a grudge match with a 2010 Cadilac SRX!

2010 Acura MDX (source: acura)

2009 Acura MDX (source: acura)

Scottie, raise the shields! We have already seen the 2010 Acura RDX, so the new face of Acura is now complete with the MDX receiving the now infamous shield grille.

To be honest the new schnoz is an improvement for the premium crossover. I had never been won over by the “Maximum Overdrive” face of the present MDX.

Click for a link to a gallery of exterior shots of the 2010 Acura MDX. The next story in this series will have interior photos.

The 2010 refresh bestows new front and rear bodywork. Under the skin, there is an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission for better performance, improved efficiency and longer lasting action. Uh, okay, I made that last “benefit” up. Ride and handling also benefit from a revised power steering system, stiffer trailing arm mounting, body rigidity improvements and reduced overall noise, vibration and harshness.

Inside, the 2010 MDX benefits from the expanded use of Milano leather, a new thicker sport steering wheel with racing-inspired paddle shifters, new gauges, easier to understand button placement for center stack functions, available ventilated front seats and upgraded interior trim. In addition, a host of new technology is available including AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ and Traffic Rerouting™. Other available features include a new full VGA 8-inch navigation screen, a new rear view camera with three unique view choices, upgraded rear entertainment system, an updated audio system with a dedicated 15 GB hard disk drive (HDD) and USB port connectivity, even more LED lighting.

A new Advance Package adds ventilated front seats with specially contoured seat foam covered by perforated Milano premium leather, a sport steering wheel with unique design racing-inspired paddle shifters on the steering wheel and textured metallic interior accents. The Advance Package also includes the Collision Mitigating Braking System™ (CMBS™), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), blind spot information system (BSI) and the Active Damper System. In addition, the Advance Package delivers 19x8-inch 7-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels and auto-leveling HID front headlights.

In part two of this series, we’ll take a closer look at the 2010 model and offer up a gallery of interior photos.

Ferrari 458 Italia poses for the camera: Backward-looking cues or hot buttons?

Ferrari 458 Italia

Out with the old: 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia

Noted designer Robert Cumberford, who analyzes car designs for Automobile Magazine, doesn't have a lot of kind things to say about most modern Ferraris. Cumberford has stated that modern Ferraris "Have little by little descended to being collections of backward-looking "cues" and "references" and "identity marks" that push client hot buttons."

Does this 458 Italia push your hot buttons? Below is Ferrari's official press release regarding the forthcoming Ferrari F430 replacement. For eye candy, I have posted a picture of the Ferrari 458 Italia above and a gallery of images in this link.

If all of this is too rich for your blood, consider Ferrari's Lap Time Chronograph for the not so unreasonable sum of about $350. It's actually a pretty sexy looking watch!

The 458 Italia is the latest incarnation of the mid-rear engined berlinetta and will be unveiled at the next Frankfurt Motor Show

Maranello, July 28th 2009 – While it's true that every Ferrari is innovative by definition, it's equally true that in the course of the Prancing Horse's history, certain cars have marked a genuine departure from the current range. This is very much the case with the Ferrari 458 Italia, which is a massive leap forward from the company's previous mid-rear engined sports cars.

The new model is a synthesis of style, creative flair, passion and cutting-edge technology, characteristics for which Italy as a nation is well-known. For this reason Ferrari chose to add the name of its homeland to the traditional figure representing the displacement and number of cylinders.

The Ferrari 458 Italia is a completely new car from every point of view: engine, design, aerodynamics, handling, instrumentation and ergonomics, just to name a few.

A two-seater berlinetta, the Ferrari 458 Italia, as is now traditional for all Ferrari's road-going cars, benefits hugely from the company's Formula 1 experience. This is particularly evident in the speed and precision with which the car responds to driver inputs and in the attention focused on reducing internal friction in the engine for lower fuel consumption than the F430, despite the fact that both overall displacement and power have increased. However, Ferrari's track experience makes its presence felt in the 458 Italia not only in terms of pure technological transfer but also on a more emotional level, because of the strong emphasis on creating an almost symbiotic relationship between driver and car. The 458 Italia features an innovative driving environment with a new kind of steering wheel and dashboard that is the direct result of racing practice. Once again input from Michael Schumacher - who was involved from the very start of the 458 Italia project - played an invaluable part.

The Ferrari 458 Italia's Pininfarina design provides further evidence of the complete departure from the past that this new car hails. The Ferrari 458 Italia has a compact, aerodynamic shape, underscoring the concepts of simplicity, efficiency and lightness that inspired the project. As with every Ferrari, the car's styling has been very heavily influenced by the requirements for aerodynamic efficiency, as can be seen from the downforce of 140 kg at 200km/h generated by the new model. The front features a single opening for the front grille and side air intakes, with aerodynamic sections and profiles designed to direct air to the coolant radiators and the new flat underbody. The nose also sports small aeroelastic winglets which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and cut drag.

The new 4499 cc V8 is the first Ferrari direct injection engine to be mid-rear mounted. It has a very low piston compression height typical of racing engines which contributed to achieving its compression ratio of 12.5:1. Equipped with the traditional flat-plane crankshaft, the engine delivers 570 CV at 9000 rpm and, with an outstanding power output of 127 CV/litre, sets a new benchmark not only for the whole Ferrari range and the history of company, but also for the entire market segment. Maximum torque is 540 Nm at 6000 rpm, over 80 per cent of which is available from 3250 rpm. Specific torque is a record 120 Nm/litre. However, what is truly extraordinary is the amount of torque available while still maintaining high levels of power at low revs.

The car's soundtrack is also typical Ferrari, with an exciting, powerful growl emerging from the engine before it channels through to the exhaust's three rear tailpipes.

The 458 Italia is equipped with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which increases performance whilst providing very smooth shifts even at full throttle. The engineers have developed specific, sportier gear ratios to match the power and torque curves of the new V8, guaranteeing high torque even at lower engine speeds and allowing the car to reach its maximum speed in top gear.

This new Ferrari is also a major leap forward when it comes to cutting emissions. Despite the fact that the new engine is significantly more powerful than the V8s that preceded it, the Ferrari 458 Italia produces just 320 g/km of CO2 and fuel consumption is 13.7 l/100 km (combined cycle), the best in the entire segment.

The engineers also focused on weight reduction during the design phase for similar reasons. Consequently, the Ferrari 458 Italia has a dry weight of 1380 kg with a power-to-weight ratio of 2.42 kg/CV. Weight distribution is also optimal with 58 per cent over the rear axle. The result of the engineers' endeavours can be summed up in to two simple statistics which together perfectly encapsulate the Ferrari 458 Italia's exceptional performance: 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed in excess of 325 km/h.

For the new chassis, once more in aluminium, Maranello's engineers incorporated various types of advanced alloys along with aerospace industry-derived manufacturing and bonding techniques.

With regard to vehicle dynamics, the Ferrari 458 Italia's suspension features twin wishbones at the front and a multi-link set-up at the rear tuned for maximum roadholding and superlative handling. Along with a more direct steering ratio, the 458 Italia thus offers extremely rapid turn-in and body control whilst maintaining superior ride comfort.

The integration of the E-Diff and F1-Trac (now controlled by the same ECU) and their respective mappings is even greater, resulting in a 32 per cent increase in longitudinal acceleration out of corners compared to previous models. The evolution of the control logic, with even faster and more accurate calculation of levels of grip, ensures even greater roadholding, better handling and ease of control on the limit.

The same ECU also governs the high-performance ABS, providing even more precise control over the logic threshold and greater efficiency. The brakes also feature a prefill function whereby the pistons in the callipers move the pads into contact with the discs on lift off to minimise delay in the brakes being applied. This combined with the ABS has cut the 100-0 km/h braking distance to a mere 32.5 metres.

The Ferrari 458 Italia's interior is another area of the car that exalts its sporty personality. The driver is welcomed by a new layout and a revolutionary ergonomic interface where the main controls are all clustered on the steering wheel.

With the Ferrari 458 Italia, Maranello has brought a highly distinctive new car to its 8-cylinder range. The company now offers two models that share a common, race-derived DNA, both exceptionally sporty and fun to drive in true Ferrari tradition, but aimed at two very different kinds of client. While the Ferrari California was created for owners requiring a more versatile sports car with a practical edge, the 458 Italia is designed for owners for whom the priority is uncompromising on-road performance with occasional track day capability, but who still demand a car that is useable in day-to-day driving like all Ferrari's recent models.

Grab a martini and escape from Cash for Clunkers! Vintage automotive advertisements

Something is missing from today's ads compared to the past.

Yesterday this author was bemoaning the fact that Kia has chosen not to use its hamsters in future commercials. I loved the Kia Soul commercial so much that I had to write an article about it.

I have been critical of some ads, such as Acura's TSX debacle and supportive of new ventures such as Ford's Fiesta Movement. However, I really got a little teary-eyed when Jim Norris retweeted a link to Well Medicated's " 50 Inspiring Vintage Advertisements" post. This is Mad Men quality stuff in the gallery (click link to enjoy). I can almost hear Don Draper's voice right now!

Somehow, even when I look at the best of the best from today's agencies, there was a certain magic captured by these advertisements that I'm not sure we can ever recapture. Companies were confident and boastful and we believed them. Today I think we are far too cynical to fall for such prose (well, perhaps ED medications are the exception to that).

For more info: Enjoy the gallery and if you like what you see, consider checking out Well Medicated's post.

Mahindra PR: Refreshed Australian Mahindra truck very similar to USA models

This Australian model is "very similar" to U.S. version

Compare the above refreshed model to this picture

Recently this author has covered the forthcoming, Indian made and diesel powered pickup from Mahindra. What has been missing from the picture up until now was literally a picture of exactly what the truck is going to look like. We still do not have official images of the U.S. market vehicle, but this author has confirmed with Global Vehicles / Mahindra USA PR representative Mike Geylin that the recently announced Australian market Mahindra Pik-Up (love that spelling) is “Very similar to the U.S. version.”

The picture shown above is the newly refreshed Australian model. No pictures of the revised interior could be found. Check out this article is a gallery of images that this author has obtained from Mahindra’s USA distributor Global Vehicles. These images are not of the refreshed Australian model nor the finalized US model. This is probably one of the most comprehensive collection of images, especially obtained by this author from Mahindra's USA distributor.

Below are snippets (with some comments by the author) from the Australian launch. Not everything quoted below may be applicable to the U.S. market.

So what changes can we expect from the pictures on the Mahindra USA website? Well according to the Australian press release, there is a new grille, with a characteristic silver centre piece that features the brand’s logo. The road armor wrap-around bumpers provide the Next Generation Mahindra Pik Up with an updated and muscular appearance, and the a new hood scoop adds grunt to the vehicle’s “aggressive bearing.” Sports headlights, fog lamps and ‘pull type’ door handles provide additional curves and muscle to the new design.

Inside, the updated interiors with ergonomically designed seats, which have been designed after meticulous ‘Body Pressure Mapping’. Longer seatbelts (sad commentary on the state of our health), new dual-tone, electronically powered outer rear vision mirrors and a 2-Din audio containing a stereo system with full CD / MP3 player and radio, USB and SD card port provide maximum convenience and comfort. The hand brake and gear lever have a new smart, sporty look.

Safety was beefed up as well, Anti Lock Braking System (ABS) and front dual (SRS) airbags for the driver and passenger. This is complemented by Pretensioner/Load limiter seat belts supplied by Autoliv Australia, and audio controls on the steering wheel which allow the driver to keep his eyes firmly on the road. This will ensure a higher safety rating and allow a broader buyer appeal. To provide additional safety assurance and increased driver confidence, Roadside Assist has been extended from 12 months to 3 years.

This author will continue to cover the Mahindra launch here in the United States very closely. Consider signing up for e-mail alerts whenever this author submits a new article so that you can stay up to date on the news of the day and any breaking Mahindra developments.

Ford future cars and product plans: 2010 and beyond

One-off Mustang AV-X10 'Dearborn Doll'

Recently I have covered Ford's entire 2010 lineup in a three part series. You can read the story by clicking here for Part I, Part II and Part III. I have also covered the Future of Lincoln, 2010 and beyond. You can read the Lincoln post by clicking here. Now attention turns to Ford, what can we expect to see over the next few years.

View the slideshow below for a look into Ford's European vacation inspired future.

The big news for 2010 Fords were the amazing number of refreshes that its cars received. The Fusion, Mustang and Taurus all became much better cars for the 2010 model year. Turkish made Transit Connect compact van has also arrived on the scene. EcoBoost also became available in the 2010 Taurus SHO (standard) and Ford Flex (optional). The Explorer Sport Trac may cease to exist in 2010.

In 2011 the European Ford Fiesta (summer 2010) and Ford Focus (late 2010) will arrive on the scene. The cars will be fine tuned for American's, but still pack a lot of Euro flavor. The Fiesta will be available in sedan and five door hatch configuration and it is this author's belief that the Focus will arrive with the same configurations as well. Automotive News is forecasting a sedan and three door hatch for the Focus, but I believe this is incorrect. Ford officials have made it clear to me that they feel that three door hatches would not generate enough volume to warrant sales in America. The Focus could begin assembly in late 2010 and thus arrive at dealerships in early 2011 as a 2012 model. Also in 2011, the Edge will receive a refreshing, likely with EcoBoost offerings. The Ford Explorer will also attempt to become relevant once more, moving from body on frame to lighter unibody construction. This former sales champ has lost its way as consumers shunned fuelish, heavy SUVs. Ford would dearly love to have the Explorer return to the top of the sales charts. The F-Series Super Duty will get a refreshing with a reworked exterior and interior improvements (how's that for vague?). Ford may kill the Crown Victoria and Ranger pickup in 2011 as well, however, both of these models seem to be invincible, so those dates are tentative at best. Ford just gave the Ranger an extension by equipping it with safety gear to live on past 2010 and the "little pickup that could" has done very well for the Blue Oval. Ford may elect to bring an Australian developed small truck here to the U.S. to keep the Ranger franchise alive.

The small Ford Ka is as if yet still unlikely for this market, however the fact that Ford's partner, Fiat, will be assembling the Ka's sister vehicle the Fiat 500 in North America must be very tempting to Ford. It would seem to be a very cheap way for Ford to offer the Ka to Americans. Don't count the Ka out! The excellent Ford Mondeo will not be making the trip but the next generation Fusion will likely be merged with the Mondeo. Likewise, the attractive Ford Kuga will not make it to the States until the Escape is ready for a do-over. Look for a Focus based people mover, likely the next generation European Ford C-Max, to make its way into our lineup. There a no big changes, other than EcoBoost, for the likes of F-150 and Expedition. That does't mean Ford doesn't have a few tricks up its sleeve to keep these models fresh, it's just that we don't know about them. At some point the Econoline will give way to the global Ford Transit van, the wet dream of Ford executives for decades, but the timing for that changeover is still unclear.

Whew! That's a lot of product! As you can see, Ford is relying heavily on Ford of Europe products and platforms. The automotive press have long begged for these excellent products to make it our way, but in the past Ford has stubbed its toe. It's doubtful that Ford will fail this time around.

Lincoln future cars and product plans: 2010 and beyond

Lincoln hood ornament (source: flickr user pmarkham)

In 1999 Cadillac admitted that it had "overstated" its 1998 sales in an attempt to keep its 57 year winning streak as the nation's best selling luxury car. This confession lead to a Lincoln victory.

The final numbers were for 1998 were Lincoln: 187,121 and Cadillac: 182, 570. There was much rejoicing at Lincoln's headquarters.

As a side note, a 1999 NY Times article covering the Cadillac/Lincoln story quoted stock prices of $86.94 for GM and $64.38 for Ford.

That moment of victory was probably a high-water mark for the brand. Since that time, Cadillac has surged forward in its attempts to recapture the title "Standard of the world." Meanwhile Lincoln has seen its Navigator, the veritable engine of Lincoln sales, slow to a crawl and its other offering post modest sales numbers. At the end of the 2008, a "just shoot me" year for car sales, Lincoln posted 107,295 sales and Cadillac scored 161,159.

Click to view this slideshow of future Lincolns and a bit of the past.

All that is in the past. Let's look to the future! For 2010 Lincoln is launching its new crossover, the MKT and refreshing its MKZ sedan. The turbocharged EcoBoost engine will be made available in the MKS and MKT. For 2011 the MKX gets the new family snout when it gets a mid-cycle update while the Navigator and Town Car may come to an end. Looking further ahead, Automotive News predicts a possible compact sedan, compact crossover and an MKS refresh for 2012.

The switch towards smaller luxury is quite a departure from the Navigator fueled sales renaissance of the late nineties. Will consumers accept a Ford Focus sized luxry car? There was a lot of interest over the Lincoln C concept at this year's Detroit Auto show, but would that translate in to appreciatable sales? A small, luxury crossover based on the Ford Kuga (see slideshow) would probably fare better.

I have covered Ford's entire 2010 lineup in a three part series. You can read the story by clicking here for Part I, Part II and Part III. I have also written an article on Ford's 2010+ future lineup, you can read it here.

With Oscar Mayer Jr. dead, Wienermobiles have sensed a disruption in the force

Wienermobile "Bologna" (source: wikipedia/scottfamily5)

On July 6, 2009 Oscar G. Mayer, Jr., grandson of the founder and the third Oscar Mayer, died at the age of 95 in Hospice Care in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. Since that time, a number is disturbing Wienermobile incidents have taken place.

On July 17, 2009 a Wienermobile penetrated a garage after its driver had some transmission/brake confusion.

Now the "Outdoor Circle," an environmental group dedicated to protecting Hawaii's scenery, claims the Wienermobile is in violation of the Hawaii's ban on vehicular advertising.

A gallery of Wienermobiles has been assembled for your viewing pleasure, you can view the pictures in the slideshow below this post.

Below is a TV station's coverage of the Wienermobile crash. It is so riddled with hot dog puns that this author feels compelled to warn you: Watch at your own risk (oh, go ahead and watch it...don't be a wiener).

2010 Buick LaCrosse takes a pretty picture

2010 Buick LaCrosse (source: gm)

What impresses this author the most about the 2010 Buick LaCrosse is the sedan's styling. There is just enough swoop and jewelry to keep you interested but not so much that it becomes gaudy (the hood vents are a bit iffy).

Previously, I have reported on the 2010 Buick LaCrosse and its merits.

General Motors has released another cache of images and I think it deserves a slideshow! I complimented GM officials the other day on the great photography of the 2010 LaCrosse, but honestly the credit lies much more with the sylists. This LaCrosse simply takes a great picture no matter what you park it in front of.

All of this excitement about the styling doesn't make the LaCrosse a perfect car. Some publications carp about the fact that the top of the line 280HP engine cannot be coupled with all wheel drive. With 280 ponies galloping out the front wheels, you are going to get some torque steer and that is not good for anybody. The LaCrosse is also a bit portly, running around 4,000 pound give or take.

Still that is not to detract from the great achievement that is the 2010 LaCrosse. It has been a long time coming and now GM finally has resources to promote the brand. Hopefully a foray into a lesser models, AKA Regal and a next generation Astra redirect to Buick can be carried off with similar style and class.

2010 Acura RDX photos appear online

2010 Acura RDX (source: acura website)

You'll recall that details about the 2010 Acura RDX have been trickling in for some time now. You can read up on previous posts about the 2010 Acura RDX by clicking here and the initial 2010 Acura RDX leak here.

A gallery of 2010 Acura RDX images is located in this slideshow.

The big news, besides the visual tweaks, is that you can now buy a front wheel drive version of the RDX. Previously you had to pony up for SH-AWD, but the extra cost and weight were a turnoff for some buyers.

A check on Honda's media site does not yield any 2010 RDX photos, but a quick set of screen captures by Autoblog yielded a nice treasure chest of images.

The shield grille actually looks decent on the RDX whereas the TL looks like a disaster. Hopefully the TL will get a re-worked schnoz pronto!

This author appreciates Acura's generous equipment levels, but is underwhelmed with the mileage that the RDX achieves. The FWD model scores 19/24 city/highway and the SH-AWD model achieves 17/22. Given the size of the vehicle and Honda's penchant for fuel thriftiness, it is a disappointment. A 240HP motor should provide better numbers. The Toyota V6 RAV4 AWD delivers 19/26 while serving up 269HP using regular grade fuel (the RDX wants premium).

Hello OnStar? The vehicle I just stole won't start

This graphic shows the components of RIB

OnStar has been on a tear as of late, pumping out new features to compete with the likes of Microsoft's SYNC technology (which has performed extremely well for Ford).

OnStar isn't the greatest at providing a lot of media photos, but that didn't stop this author from rooting around the media closet for a few gems and adding his own snarky remarks. Check out the pictures in this slideshow.

The big difference in OnStar's eyes is that it has the cellular capability and related hardware all baked into the car which not only makes it harder to disable, but also allows for a wider range of functionality. Therefore, OnStar has taken great pains to maximize the strengths of its built in platform. A new wave of Stolen Vehicle Assistance services is being rolled out with one of the first being Stolen Vehicle Slowdown and now a service called Remote Ignition Block.

Remote Ignition Block and will allow an OnStar Advisor to send a remote signal to a subscriber’s stolen vehicle to prevent the vehicle from restarting once the ignition is turned off. This capability will not only help authorities recover stolen vehicles, but can also prevent dangerous high speed pursuits from starting.

“Remote Ignition Block is a prime example of the rapid pace of technological innovation underway at OnStar. We are developing services desired by our subscribers that deliver important societal benefits as well,” said Chet Huber, OnStar president.

Remote Ignition Block builds on OnStar’s growing suite of Stolen Vehicle Assistance services which includes GPS technology that pinpoints a stolen vehicle’s exact location and Stolen Vehicle Slowdown® which can remotely slow a stolen vehicle to idle speed.

OnStar will make Remote Ignition Block available on select over 2 million GM 2009 and 2010 model year vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.

The process for deployment:

• An OnStar subscriber reports their vehicle stolen to authorities and requests stolen vehicle assistance from OnStar.

• Law enforcement provides confirmation to the OnStar Advisor that the vehicle is in fact stolen.

• The OnStar Advisor pinpoints the vehicle’s exact GPS location and sends a remote signal to prevent stolen vehicle from starting the next time someone attempts to start it.

• On select models, authorities can also request Stolen Vehicle Slowdown if they have a clear line of sight of the stolen vehicle and confirm that conditions are safe to slow down the vehicle.

“Technology like Stolen Vehicle Slowdown and now Remote Ignition Block will improve the chances of apprehending suspected car thieves and are great assets to the law enforcement community” said Michigan’s Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard. “Removing an instrument of harm from the hands of criminals improves the safety of our officers, our highways and our citizens” said Bouchard.

For more than 13 years, OnStar has helped authorities in locating tens of thousands of stolen vehicles in order to assist with their safe and quick recovery. OnStar receives approximately 600 Stolen Vehicle Assistance requests from subscribers each month and has helped in over 28,000 requests over the past decade.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Uniform Crime Reports, there were 1,095,769 vehicles stolen in the U.S. in 2007, equating to one motor vehicle stolen every 28.8 seconds. Stolen vehicle incidents can turn into dangerous high speed pursuits; at least 300 people die as a result of the more than 30,000 high speed police chases that happen every year. With capabilities such as Stolen Vehicle Slowdown and now Remote Ignition Block, OnStar subscribers have the added peace of mind knowing their vehicle can be prevented from being used as an instrument of harm. In fact, 97% of OnStar subscribers surveyed said they would like Remote Ignition Block capability on their vehicles.

Leaked! 2010 Saab 9-5 sedan photos hit the Internet

2010 Saab 9-5 sedan

This image has been circulating for some time now.

We now have a wonderful cache of photos of the forthcoming 2010 Saab 9-5! Click the link to see the full gallery of photos of both the exterior and interior.

It was just the other day that the last Saab 9-5 rolled off the assembly line and now we have a view of the future.

Officially the sedan bows at the Frankfurt Auto Show, but it is a rare day that photography can remain secret once it starts to be distributed, especially with a model of such importance as the Saab 9-5.

Based off the same unpinnings as the Opel Insignia, Chinese Buick Regal and Buick LaCrosse, the 2010 Saab 9-5 has been molded into a style at once recognizable to Saab fanatics.

2009 Saab 9-5 sedan

The new sedan not only pays homage to Saab's history, it also sports the latest in Saab graphics.

Wagon fans need not despair, there will be a SportCombi, but it will be revealed at a later date and time.

The big question that remains, did Saab get the driving dynamics right? We'll have to wait awhile before any impressions are published.

2010 Ford lineup Part II

Ford Motor Company is delivering its freshest lineup ever for the 2010 model year with a series of new, high-quality, fuel-efficient cars and crossovers and an unprecedented investment in advanced new powertrains.

Ford today is rolling out its entire 2010 model year Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup for North America and announcing plans for 30 new powertrain actions globally – 22 in North America alone – by the end of 2010.

“We are creating a full lineup of Ford vehicles – small, medium and large cars, utilities and trucks – that are best-in-class in fuel efficiency, quality, technology and safety and available to consumers with exceptional value,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “We are making fuel economy a reason to buy a Ford, and we are distinguishing ourselves as leaders in connectivity and unique consumer-friendly technologies – many of which are appearing in our 2010-model lineup for the first time ever.”

The unprecedented number of new vehicle introductions for the 2010 model year includes:

  • 2010 Ford Taurus and Taurus SHO

Additional improvements include:

  • A new 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine will go on sale in the 2010 calendar year. It is the first EcoBoost engine to include Twin-Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) and will deliver a 10 to 20 percent fuel economy improvement versus larger-displacement V-6 engines, without compromising performance

Sun sets on General Motors Sky and Solstice plant

The Pontiac Solstice coupe is drop dead gorgeous

As General Motors begins to take some of its product lines out behind the barn and shoot them, it’s hard not to get a bit misty eyed. Take for example the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, two American kids growing up in the heartland (okay, actually Delaware).

I remember the first time I laid eyes on the Pontiac Solstice. It was at a GM ride and drive event that was touring the country. The line to test drive the car was long, the day was hot and my wife was questioning exactly why we had to wait in line for this particular car when the line for the Tony Stewart Signature Series Monte Carlo (with orange trim) had no one in line. I gave her the “Surely you must be joking” look and then continued to count the minutes. A fight broke out in the front of the line when someone either tried to score another drive or cut in front, either way no other GM car on the test track inspired that kind of passion. When we finally reached the front of the line, I was practically salivating. We sat down low in the seat, almost so low that my wife could hardly see over the dash. I shifted into first and the Solstice squirted forward. I was quite smitten with the car, even after just a few minutes in the driver’s seat.

My next encounter with the Solstice and Sky wouldn’t be until 2007 when I was invited to GM’s Milford proving grounds for a sampling of their 2008 lineup. Driving around those hallowed grounds was a real treat made even more special when driving with the top down in a Saturn Sky. Yes, the hood shook when I drove over rough patches and the cabin materials were on the hard, cheap-ish side of things, but who cared? I was driving the whee out of a red convertible on GM’s dime and all I had to do was steer clear of the GM proving ground police. As luck would have it, I took a few wrong turns in the in the Sky and ended up with an extended tour of Milford. While I half-heartedly tried to find my way back, a procession of a Buick Enclave, Cadillac CTS and Saturn Sky passed me in the other direction. It was hard not to admire the brilliant styling of those cars. Thank you Bob Lutz I muttered under my breath. You can watch my awkward interview in a YouTube clip shown below.

The Sky and Solstice would have had brilliant successors, I can just feel it. Whatever shortcomings the current models had, GM would have been able to smooth over. Sadly, that day will never come and GM leaves this segment behind. To be certain, sales of convertibles is mercurial at best. The Kappa twins had issues from an intruding gasoline tank, mere suggestions of cup holders and overall refinement that could not best the Miata. Still I am very torn up about the loss of these two gems, more so even than the loss of the Pontiac G8 (which doesn’t make a lot of sense). We can hope that one day GM will be in a position to once again offer up such models to the buying public. However, any such models would be far down the road.

I have always told myself that I’ll buy one of these convertibles on the used market someday. Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubt if I will ever come back. There will be hot new models and I’ll forget all about these two stylish, but flawed machines. One day I'll be watching an auction like Barrett-Jackson and my memories will all come flooding back. The lights will turn off at General Motors’ assembly plant in Wilmington, Delaware at the end of the month. Not only will this be the end of era of GM assembly in Delaware, it is the last auto assembly plant in Delaware. Farewell my little twins, you will be missed.

Here is my tear jerkingly bad interview. I swear I was ambushed by the camera!

Here is another tear jerker. This video was shot when the Kappa cars were first beginning production. There was such hope and optism by the workers. Now that we know the ultimate fate of the plant, it's a little tough to watch without feeling bad for some of these people.

New Honda Motor president says RWD, V8 sedan 'Meaningless emulation'

Honda Motor Company president Takanobu Ito

Anyone who had been hoping for an rear wheel drive Acura with a honkin' V8 engine under the hood isn't going to be happy hear this, but the new president of Honda Motor Company Takanobu Ito told reporters recently that "I don't think we need a classic front engine, rear drive car. It would be meaningless to emulate what other companies have been doing for more than five decades."

Of course the counterpoint could be made that companies have produced these sedans with this setup because it works really well, but Ito doesn't want to hear about it and would rather focus on other technologies such as hybrids.

2011 Ford Fiesta and 2011 Ford Focus on schedule for North American launch in 2010

This European Ford Fiesta

In 2010 Ford Motor Company is not planning in dipping its toes into the small car waters, it is planning to cannonball right in!

In 2011 Ford Fiesta will the first to hit the water and as you may have previously read, it is a very competitive car that should give the Honda Fit actual fits.

Later in the second half of 2010 Ford will pump out a new Focus that will once again sync the United States' edition with the European model. Currently if you were to hop in a 2009 Ford Focus here in the States and then jump in a 2009 European Ford Focus, you would think that some sort of cruel joke had been played up us Americans

"Right now, both of those programs remain on target," Derrick Kuzak, Group Vice President, Global Product Development for Ford, said in an interview with Automotive News. "And on the Fiesta side, launching in the U.S., we will be building on some very good momentum because the vehicle has already launched in other regions of the world."

America will be getting four door sedans and five door hatchback configurations for both the Focus and Fiesta. In a previous interview with Fiesta’s brand manager, Sam De La Garza, it was mentioned that Ford doesn't believe there would be enough market demand for a three door hatch model in the States.
