2009 San Francisco Auto Show: Pictures, videos and Saab's last stand?

2010 Ford F-150 Raptor (source: msheena)

This is part two in my coverage of the 2009 San Francisco Auto Show, to read part one you can click here.

When I crossed over to the other hall at the Moscone Center, I got a lump in my throat: There was the Saab display, with the new Saab 9-5 sedan getting center billing. It is hard not be a bit emotional about the Saab brand. My wife and I both have a strong history with the Swedish cars and the thought that Saab might ending is hard to fathom. Saab had planned a press event for the San Francisco show, but literally canceled it a few hours after sending the invite. Looking over the new Saab 9-5, it has all the makings of being a strong entry. There still is hope that Saab might be purchased by outside investors and that the San Francisco show won't be one of the last events for the marque. The Saab stand is already bought and paid for at this week's Los Angeles show, so technically if the company goes into the history books the LA show would probably be its the last. Let us hope for a miracle. Shots of the 9-5 sedan are in the slideshow below this article.

Also on display at the San Francisco show were the controversial Acura ZDX and Honda Crosstour. These hatchbacks have somewhat awkward styling with the Acura winning the beauty contest (if barely). I am usually a big fan of anything with a hatch, but neither of these cars wins me over. I had held some hope that these cars would be better looking in person, but sadly my opinion did not change upon viewing them up close and personal. My opinion notwithstanding, both the ZDX and Crosstour were surrounded by interested visitors and a friend of mine was quite taken with the ZDX, so they may hit their sales targets. I have embedded a video of the Crosstour below this post and ZDX photos are in the slideshow.

The Ford area was relatively busy in comparison to other manufacturer's displays. A large reason for this was a talking robot that captivated the crowd with a comedy routine. The robot was a great way to keep folks in the Ford area while telling them about innovations like the MyKey system which allows parents to limit speed and audio volume when teen drivers are behind the wheel.

Also receiving a lot of interest from the crowds was the Hyundai Equus luxury sedan. The Equus will slot above the well received Genesis and will be priced in an estimated $40K to $50K range. Interest seemed to be strong, we will see if that translates into sales. Photos of the Equus are in the slideshow below.

The Academy of Art University had a nice collection of classic cars on display and I will post a story and slideshow on the display as my third and final installation of my 2009 San Francisco Auto Show coverage.

2010 Toyota 4Runner: Complete 360 video

2010 Toyota 4Runner (courtesy: Toyota)

While attending the 2009 San Francisco Auto Show, I had the opportunity to check out the new 2010 Toyota 4Runner.

Below this post is a video of the 4Runner spinning on a turntable. It is a nice way to view the truck from all angles and gain another perspective.

Overall, I found the 2010 Toyota 4Runner to be as handsome in person as it appears online. Sadly, my stopover at the Honda booth was not as fruitful as the Honda Crosstour looks as droopy in person as it does in pictures.

In addition to the video, I also have uploaded a fresh batch of 4Runner photos. For more information on the 2010 Toyota 4Runner, you can view my previous post on the 4Runner which includes many more photos, quotes from reviewers and a link to a brochure.

2009 San Francisco Auto Show: Photos, event info and insight

2010 Bentley Continental GTC Speed (source: msheena)

The 2009 San Francisco Auto Show is in full swing at the Moscone Center.

The show runs from Thursday, November 26, 2009 through Monday, December 2.

The show opens at 10AM and runs until 10PM except for Monday, December 2 when it closes one hour earlier at 9PM.

Admission is $8.00 and the ticket booths accept cash only, something I learned the hard way when I showed up with plastic only. A quick trip to the ATM at the Metreon remedied the situation, but don't find yourself in the same trap! Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.

Don't just take my word for it, check out my pictures as part one of the 2009 San Francisco Auto Show photo gallery below this post.

I attended the show today, Friday December 27, and found the crowds to be manageable. A quick jaunt down the stairs and I was off to the races. My first stop was at the Toyota booth to check out the 2010 Toyota 4Runner. The crowds were light around the turntable display and I captured a full video of the 4Runner that I will post later on.

Next on my "must see" tour was to check out the crowd around the Chevrolet Volt. There was an spokeswoman on hand to discuss the Volt's particulars and educate folks about plug-in hybrids. It is always difficult to determine how many people in the crowd are ogling the spokesperson verses actually learning about the vehicle, but I would say that in general show goers were quite interested in the Volt. I'll contrast the Chevrolet Volt display with the poor Jeep spokeswoman who was equally attractive, but was speaking to an empty booth: Nobody wanted to learn about the Jeep Wrangler's electronic sway bar disconnect. Also at the Chevrolet booth were many Camaros, including a bright yellow Transformer's edition just like the one that 101 year old Virgil Coffman purchased.

Continuing my tour, I zipped around to the Land Rover display to check out the 2010 Land Rover LR4. I have always had a soft spot for Land Rovers and owned a troubled 1998 model. The 2010 LR4 looks very similar to the untrained eye, but there are some tweaks to the exterior and more importantly major improvements on the inside. A healthy crowd was checking out all Land Rover's models, so the interest is there. Sadly, there wasn't nearly the interest in the freshly styled Jaguar XJ. The sedan is quite attractive, but whereas the Mercedes and BMW areas were jam packed with crowds, the Jaguar area was relatively light on peeps.

One vehicle that was doing extremely well was the four door Porsche Panamera. The crowd was so thick that I did not even attempt to sit inside, but rather I shot some exterior photos of the car. While some folks have derided the Panamera's shape, I find no issue with it. The roofline affords real headroom in the back and the hatch makes it more practical. I would buy one in a heartbeat if I had the means to do so. Lotus was displaying the more luxurious (relatively speaking) Lotus Evora.

That takes care of one hall at the Moscone Center. Part two of my 2009 San Francisco Auto Show coverage can be found by clicking here.

2011 Toyota Sienna to offer 4 cylinder option, ottoman seating, sport model

Current Toyota Sienna (source: m.sheena)

As we approach the December 2 reveal for the 2011 Toyota Sienna more information is starting to leak out. These particular details come from a Toyota Canada release posted on Toyota Nation.

Please note: At the request of the person who posted the thread on Toyota Nation, the link to the thread has been removed. It should be noted that this information is unconfirmed by Toyota, but additional sources outside of the Toyota Nation thread are confirming these features on the 2011 Sienna.

Keep in mind that because this is a Canadian release, there may be some slight differences in the USA version (but I emphasize the word slight).

Relive the 2010 Toyota Sienna in the slideshow below with a gallery of images including special guest appearances from the Ramp Van and Lift Seat van.

Recently we saw pictures of a 2011 Toyota Sienna mule that had tight(er) fitting camouflage and showing a Venza inspired face. We also learned that the 2011 Sienna will have a sport model and now we have more details: The SE model will have more aggressive exterior styling, a unique dark cloth interior, firmer steering, lowered suspension, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Sienna will also be following the Venza into the 4 cylinder realm, offering up the same 2.7L engine mated to a six speed automatic. The 2.7L motor serves up 182HP in the Venza and will likely do about the same in the 2011 Sienna. The excellent 266HP, 3.5L V6 remains basically as-is.

Inside the Sienna, the wider DVD screen that we heard about is apparently 16.4" which is a big jump up from the 9" display in the 2010 Sienna. Also a welcome addition will be ottoman seating, allowing passengers to recline with their feet supported. The ottoman seating will likely be for the second row passengers only.

For those folks biting their fingers, AWD will still be available. No hybrid option is mentioned in the Canadian release, but it is a foregone conclusion that it will be made available within the next few years.

In a final note, Smart Key entry will be available and even base models will get 17" alloy wheels, nifty! Cloth models will feature "Easy Clean" fabric, very similar to YES Essentials fabric found in Chrysler products. No word about the rumored dual sunroofs.

I will have all the details on the 2011 model as soon as they become available, so use the "subscribe to receive alerts" link below to be notified as soon as I post the information. Assembly for the 2011 Sienna will begin in January of 2010, so 2011 models should reach showrooms by February.

2010 Lexus GX 460: When the Toyota 4Runner is not enough

2010 Lexus GX 460 (courtesy: lexus)

The Lexus GX has a pretty basic formula: Take the very capable Toyota 4Runner, soften it up a bit, add a big dash of luxury features and ladle on a nice markup. This recipe allows Lexus to move a projected 14,000 GX's to buyers who need more capacity that the Lexus RX provides.

You can view a gallery of 2010 Lexus GX 470 images in the slideshow located below this post.

Lexus claims that many GX buyers actually use the truck for towing or weekend adventures, so the new 2010 model plays up those strengths. The GX now enjoys exclusive access to the 301HP V8 engine as the 2010 Toyota 4Runner lost the optional V8. Even though the GX engine's displacement drops from 4.7 to 4.6 (hence the name change from GX 470 to GX 460) horsepower is up by 38. The GX also pumps up safety features with a mind numbing number of airbags, cameras, radar, driver attentiveness monitoring and other electronic nannies: Pretty much everything short of a built-in Saint Christopher medal.

When it comes to styling, Lexus played it safe, not altering the size or shape of the GX by noticeable amounts, with a reduction in height of 2.5 inches being the biggest change. The GX's bodywork is more sculpted, with the hood showing some nice detailing. The shape of the headlights have been called out as being awkward, but Lexus says it was necessary for the high intensity lamps. The cumbersome swinging rear door also remains, but the rear glass does flip up for access to the cargo area.

Inside the GX, Lexus pumps up the volume over the 4Runner with the use of traditional premium materials. Because the dimensions have not really changed, the third row is still a tight place to be and cargo space behind that third row is relatively nil. One troubling feature for me is proliferation of video monitors being mounted in the headrests of the front seats. While the look is cleaner and less obtrusive than a ceiling mount and perfectly fine for five seaters, a problem arises for the third row passengers who are most likely to kids.

When it comes to pricing, the saying "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" applies. The GX kicks off in the $50K range and adding pricey options like the entertainment system only takes it further north.

Current GX owners should be ecstatic, the new model does not look so different that it renders their current ride obsolete, but when it comes time to trade in the new 2010 model offers a nice menu of upgrades with a slight increase in fuel efficiency. For those of us who do not drive over anything worse than a gravel road and do not tow a boat, the GX is overkill. However, if you need a seven seater, Lexus really forces your hand as the RX only seats five. It would be nice to see a car-based seven seater from Lexus that served up a more usable third row and cargo area.

Full press release from Lexus follows below.

Lexus has introduced an all-new, second-generation GX 460 luxury utility vehicle for 2010 that is more powerful, more efficient, quieter and more luxurious than the GX 470 model it replaces. The 2010 GX 460 achieves all of these significant developments while its 10 standard airbags and the available Pre-Collision System help enhance safety.

Positioned between the brand's LX 570 premium luxury utility vehicle and unibody-based RX models, the 2010 GX 460 combines “right sized” midsize packaging with family-friendly comfort and premium craftsmanship. The GX 460 has a standard seven-passenger configuration. Once again built with rugged body-on-frame construction, the 2010 GX 460 is also equipped with full-time four-wheel drive and the advanced Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) to help provide both exceptional on-road ride and handling and true off-road capability.

The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is powered by an all-new 4.6-liter V8 that is both more powerful and more efficient than the 4.7-liter V8 it replaces. The new engine produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and is teamed to a new six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. Combined city/highway fuel economy is improved by 13 percent to an EPA-estimated 17 mpg (vs. 15 mpg in the 2009 GX 470) -- better than other V8 luxury utility vehicles and competitive with some six-cylinder models. The GX 460 has an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

With the same vehicle footprint as the GX 470 it replaces, the 2010 GX 460 provides a more versatile interior. The second row seat slides 4.1 inches fore/aft to maximize passenger and cargo carrying ability. The foldable and reclining second row seats also feature a 60/40 walk-in function to access the standard power fold-flat third row seats. The rear door window uses a flip-up glass panel for added convenience.

Luxury is enhanced in the 2010 GX 460 by an even quieter cabin, as well as new additional standard features and options. The 2010 GX 460 features standard heated and ventilated front seats for example. Among the new luxury options are semi-aniline leather, a heated steering wheel, and heated outer second-row seats. New multimedia features – both standard and optional – expand onboard family entertainment choices.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The 2010 GX 460 takes its model designation from an all-new 4.6-liter V8 engine. The new 32-valve DOHC engine features aluminum alloy cylinder heads and block with dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i), which controls valve timing and overlap on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize power, fuel efficiency and emissions. (The previous 4.7 had VVT only on the intake camshafts.) Peak torque is also up for the new 4.6, now 329 lb.-ft. at 3,500 rpm vs. 323 lb.-ft. at 3,400 rpm for the 4.7-liter engine.

The new 4.6-liter V8 is teamed to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, compared to a five-speed automatic with the previous 4.7-liter, benefiting both performance and fuel economy. The new transmission fits in the same space as the previous five-speed and features a higher top gear ratio. The new powertrain helps make the 2010 GX 460 feel more responsive in everyday driving and quieter than the previous model. The 2010 GX 460 retains the same 6,500-lb. towing capacity as the GX 470 offered.

The GX 460 comes equipped with standard full-time four-wheel drive using an electronically controlled transfer case and a TORSEN® torque-sensing center differential. It also offers a low range for off-road driving. The TORSEN differential distributes power 40:60 under most driving conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on steering input and wheel slip.

The ability to change to a 30:70 ratio during steering maneuvers helps enhance vehicle tracking through curves. If the rear wheels spin, the center differential can change the ratio to 50:50 to help control the slippage. The TORSEN differential also helps make the GX 460 less prone to slippage caused by sudden changes in road-surface conditions, such as driving through a puddle or over an ice patch. The rear differential has also been strengthened for 2010.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is one of the few premium brand luxury utility vehicles that can deliver genuine trail driving capability. Combining that capability with Lexus luxury and on-road performance makes it even more exceptional. Lexus studied vehicle usage of current owners and found that many use their GX models for family hauling during the week and vacations and camping trips on weekends. They often tow a boat or watercraft and sometimes drive to areas with unpaved and rugged trails.

Like the previous GX 470, the 2010 GX 460 has robust body-on-frame construction and does not compromise on- or off-road performance; the high-strength chassis and dynamic suspension control technology support both.

The available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) with three modes: Normal, Sport and Comfort, and independent front suspension delivers a smooth on-road ride without compromising rugged off-road capabilities. The 2010 GX 460 rides on larger standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/60 R18 tires, versus 17-inch wheels for the 2009 GX 470 model.

The power rack-and-pinion steering system helps make it easier to maneuver the GX 460 in tight spaces. Rear Adjustable Height Control (AHC) enhances the vehicle’s flexibility in a wide range of driving situations.

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)
KDSS is standard on the GX 460, and enhanced for 2010 with steering and yaw sensors. By adjusting roll resistance provided by the front and rear stabilizer bars, KDSS can reduce maximum body-roll angle by as much as 50 percent to help enhance both on-road handling response and off-highway capability.

Using hydraulic cylinders acting on each stabilizer bar and linked by a pressure-sensing valve, KDSS reduces the degree of roll stiffness provided by the stabilizer bars in response to changing road conditions and driver inputs. Because KDSS allows the stabilizer bars to disengage in certain situations like off-road driving, the nominal stiffness of the bars can be notably increased to help reduce body-tilt and improve on-road handling.

During on-road cornering, when both front and rear cylinders are compressed, no fluid flows in the system and the stabilizer bars work conventionally to help reduce body lean. In off-road driving situations, KDSS allows the wheels on each axle to move with a larger degree of side-to-side independence, helping to minimize any tendency for wheel lift. When the GX 460 encounters an uneven surface, one compressed cylinder causes fluid to flow between the front and rear cylinders, allowing the stabilizer bars to move freely. That action increases wheel travel and articulation and helps to equalize wheel loading.

Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control
In addition to KDSS, the 2010 Lexus GX 460 offers optional Crawl Control a new technology that helps make driving off-road easier. The Crawl Control feature automatically modulates the throttle and brake, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. Crawl Control is also useful for helping to free the vehicle from sand, mud or snow.

When the transmission is shifted into low range, Crawl Control regulates engine speed and output, along with braking force, to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of five low-speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus while steering over very rough level ground or steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle, or brake, pedals. Crawl Control also actuates the front and rear “virtual” locking differentials to help reduce tire slippage and optimize chassis behavior.

Without canceling Crawl Control, the driver can reduce vehicle speed by braking or adjusting the crawling speed with a selector switch. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle from rolling back while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is designed to augment the low-speed descending ability of the transmission's low range by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with no
intervention from the driver. Active traction control (A-TRAC) provides the traction benefits of having locking front and rear differentials, but with lower weight. The system can apply the brake to a slipping wheel, while transferring torque to the wheels with better traction.

A steering angle indicator in the gauge panel shows the driver at a glance which direction the front wheels are pointing – useful for situations where this can be difficult to discern, such as driving off-road or when parking.

Safety/Security Features
The GX 460, like all Lexus models, is equipped with an array of dynamic safety systems. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps keep the GX 460 going on its intended course by detecting front- and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempting to control either condition with a combination of torque intervention and individual wheel braking. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) utilizes the anti-lock brake system (ABS) and distributes proper brake force between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions and wheel-load.

Brake Assist (BA) is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking, and if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage ABS, the system supplements the applied braking power.

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) includes a class-leading standard 10 airbags: dual front and side airbags; driver and front passenger knee airbags; second-row seat-mounted side airbags, and roll-sensing side curtain airbags covering all two or three rows. The front airbags are designed to inflate according to collision severity. The roll-sensing side curtain airbags are designed to deploy when a severe tilt angle, roll or lateral G-force is detected.

The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The multi-information display within the combination meter will show a car icon with the selected following distance. If, based on a variety of inputs, PCS determines that a collision is unavoidable, the system preemptively retracts the front seat belts and pre-initializes BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.

In addition, an available Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor and Lane Departure Alert (LDA) is now available for the 2010 GX 460. Using two small cameras mounted at the front of the vehicle that work in conjunction with millimeter-wave radar, the system is sensitive enough to detect certain nonmetallic objects. The Driver Monitor System uses a third camera, mounted on the steering column, monitors the orientation of the driver's face.

If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not looking directly ahead for a few seconds or more, and if an obstacle is detected ahead, then it alerts the driver, first with a warning chime and a flashing light. As the car gets closer to the obstacle, PCS can begin to gently apply the brakes on its own.

To help assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the steering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the steering response. At the same time, PCS automatically retracts the front seatbelts and prepares the brake system to respond with full force when activated by the driver in anticipation of a possible impact.

LDA alerts the driver of unintentional lane departure by sounding a warning buzzer and displaying an alert. It does not steer the vehicle independently and it requires the driver to maintain active steering control.

New for 2010, active front headrests move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain lower speed rear-end collisions when the force of the occupant's body is applied to the seat back. Also new, the available Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), illuminates a turn or curve as the driver steers into it and includes high intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The available Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor Package includes new Intelligent High Beams with headlamp cleaners automatically adjust the high beams to avoid blinding drivers in oncoming vehicles. The cleaners help ensure optimal headlight performance in all weather conditions.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
The GX 460 presents a luxurious passenger environment with the fit and finishes expected in a Lexus. Standard features include: eight-way power-adjustable, heated/ventilated front seats; automatic climate control; leather trimmed seats and surfaces; steering wheel audio controls; rain-sensing windshield wipers; power moonroof; a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; memory system for the driver's seat, steering wheel position and outside mirrors; and an overhead console with integrated HomeLink® transmitter.

Equipped for family multimedia entertainment, the 2010 GX 460 comes standard with a Lexus Premium nine-speaker audio system with integrated iPod® control and XM® Radio receiver. Bluetooth® capability includes music streaming and hands free phone.

A rear back-up camera is standard on the 2010 GX 460. The camera provides the driver a view of what its lens can detect behind the vehicle when engaged in reverse gear, projecting the image on the standard 4.2-inch multi-information display, or the optional navigation system’s LCD display.

Luxury Options
Lexus makes personalizing the GX 460 easy for 2010 by offering a Convenience Package and a Comfort Plus Package, as well as making many of the packages’ features available as stand-alone options. The Convenience Package includes electrochromic exterior mirrors with power retract, and Intuitive Parking Assist. The Comfort Plus Package includes semi-aniline leather; heated second-row outer seats; wood-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob; and three-zone automatic climate control.

The new-generation hard disc drive (HDD) navigation system is a standalone option for 2010 and features Voice Command casual language-based voice recognition system and Bluetooth phonebook download to enhance owner convenience. The available Mark Levinson Premium Audio system is the platinum standard for OEM mobile audio and for 2010 features 17 speakers, up from 14 in the 2009 model. The available Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) system now includes two LCD screens, one in each of the front seat backrests. Three-zone automatic climate control for enhanced third-row passenger comfort is also available as a standalone option.

The newly available Wide-view Front and Side Monitor, which debuted on the 2009 LX 570 premium luxury utility vehicle, is designed to enhance visibility in tight settings, such as parking garages, and to help the driver view blind spots when pulling out of parking spaces into traffic, and stopped at intersections and T-junctions. The new available Intuitive Parking Assist helps the driver detect obstacles at the front, rear or corners of the vehicle and helps guide the GX into street or garage parking spaces.

Exterior Design
Lexus designed the 2010 GX 460 to combine function and elegance, with unmistakable brand identity rooted in the L-finesse design language. The overall effect conveys the vehicle’s full-range capability and luxury credentials. A key goal of the designers was to have the vehicle create the impression of being sculpted from a single block of metal.

The distinctive grille features three horizontal bars and, upon closer inspection, intricate detail and texture that conveys renowned Lexus attention to detail. Distinctive character lines on the hood and a chrome surround frame the grille. The front bumper features standard integrated fog lamps.

Functional design elements include low-profile roof rails and an acoustic insulation windshield that help reduce wind noise. Tasteful luxury touches abound, including green-tint UV protection front glass, privacy glass on rear windows, and running board courtesy lamps.

Interior Design
The 2010 GX 460 provides the luxury appointments and workmanship of a Lexus sedan. Reduced drivetrain noise, especially in the 3,000-4,000 rpm range, combined with new sound insulating, dampening and absorbing materials used throughout the frame and body, provide an even quieter cabin than before. Adopting a feature from the flagship LS sedans, the GX 460 uses one-touch power windows with motors that reduce speed near the closure point to minimize the sound of the window closing.

The instrument panel is designed to appear as if formed from a single metal bar and is arranged to place all vital controls within easy reach. Optitron® instrument gauges are a traditional and functional Lexus design element. Leather-trimmed seat facings, headrests, armrests, door trim, shift knob and steering wheel also add to the Lexus touch. For 2010, expanded wood trim, instrument panel stitching and soft-touch surfaces enhance the luxury feel. The GX offers three interior colors for 2010: Ecru, Black and Sepia.

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe: Commencing countdown, engines on

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe (courtesy: gm)

General Motors continues its assault on the City of Los Angeles with the release of the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe. Previously GM had given Tinseltown a look at the 2011 Buick Regal, but now GM swings for the fences with its new Cadillac CTS Coupe.

Originally previewed at the 2008 Detroit show in concept form, the 2011 production model sticks closely to the formula with only minor changes to the bombshell design. The coupe completes the Cadillac CTS family, joining the CTS sedan and CTS Sport Wagon which are already available. The CTS Coupe shares only the instrument panel, console, headlamps, front fenders and grille with its sisters, with the remaining items being exclusive to the coupe.

The coupe will be equipped with a 304-horsepower 3.6L V-6 Direct Injection engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. A six speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control will be on the option sheet. All the usual CTS options and amenities apply, one unique feature to the coupe is the touch-pad operation for the doors which replaces conventional door handles. Previously touch-pad operation has been used by GM on the Corvette and the defunct Cadillac XLR.

More details and photography will be available once the Los Angeles show is underway in early December, but until then you can examine the CTS Coupe's lines in the gallery of photos below.

Lexus LFA supercar will be available via lease only

Lexus LFA (courtesy: lexus)

I am not completely sold on the Lexus LFA supercar that will go on sale in January of 2011. Regardless of the price, which is a steep $375,000, I just do not find the design to be appealing.

Given that I am not in the target market for this car, I doubt that Lexus really cares what I think. What Lexus does care about, however, is the potential for the limited edition LFA to become a pawn in a speculator's chess game. You know the kind of people that buy every Zhu Zhu pet they can get their hands on and then attempt to flip them on eBay for tremendous profit? Well there are the same types of folks in the exotic car market as well. Lexus is hoping to nip the speculation issue in the bud by making the LFA available via a two year lease only, with the buyer being given the option to buy the car after the first two years are up.

Brian Smith, vice president of sales and dealer development for Lexus told Automotive News,

We want people out driving the car and not just parking it in a museum or selling it an inflated price.

Only 500 LFAs will be built over a two year span. Each LFA will be custom built to a buyer's specifications, you will not be able to simply buy one off the lot ready-made.

2011 Toyota Sienna: More spy shots appear

Current generation Toyota Sienna (source: toyota)

2010 Toyota Venza, notice the grille and fog lights

The December 2, 2009 debut of the 2011 Toyota Sienna is just a few short weeks away and while there has not been a break in official imagery, an intrepid VW Vortex member has captured a camouflaged 2011 Sienna (shown in this link) sporting about town (please note, spy photos are linked above, not shown here to respect the photographer's wishes).

Let us speculate together on the 2011 Sienna's features in this linked slideshow.

Now some folks might be wondering, what is the big deal? Haven't we seen plenty of Sienna spy photos before? Yes, we certainly have seen Sienna shots in the past, but these new photos of a Sienna (with copious amounts of gaffer tape) are unique because they offer a good view of the Venza inspired grille and appears to be the rumored sport edition with its over-sized fog lamps and large rims (probably 20" like the V6 Venza). Other rumored features of the 2011 Sienna include dual sunroofs and a larger DVD screen.

What else can we expect? A six speed automatic transmission is certainly a lock, techie toys like wide-view side monitor found on the 2010 Lexus RX and other active safety features will probably make it into the new model as well. Toyota will almost certainly launch a hybrid model but less certain is whether an AWD edition will remain available.

Will the sport edition, with its special bodywork, be enough to motivate male buyers? Perhaps, especially if the edition also includes sharper handling and less syrupy steering. While Honda will also be launching a new 2011 Odyssey, the real dark horse is the 2011 Nissan Quest. Honda currently owns the coveted title (wink, wink) of being the "drivers' minivan" but Nissan might have shot at that title. While it is doubtful that the 2011 Sienna will inspire driving gloves, Toyota surprises every now and then, for example the current Toyota RAV4 is more responsive than you might expect.

The 2011 Sienna will begin manufacturing in January 2011 and will likely begin to reach dealers in February.

2011 Buick Regal going rogue? From the Autobahn with love

2011 Buick Regal introduced by design chief Ed Welburn

This article is Part II in a series on the 2011 Buick Regal reveal held in Hollywood. For Part I on the 2011 Buick Regal event, please click here.

The 2011 Buick Regal is being marketed as a lower cost, sportier version of the Buick LaCrosse. That doesn't mean that when the 2011 Buick Regal arrives in the second quarter of 2010, it will be cheaper that the lowest cost Buick LaCrosse. That is because only the higher level CXL model will be initially available and while it will be cheaper that a LaCrosse CXL, it won't be less than the LaCrosse CX. The 2011 Buick Regal will be priced to compete favorably against the Acura TSX which starts at $29,310 before freight charges.

You can view more pictures from the Regal event in this slideshow link and in the previous article's slideshow.

GM's decision to market the Regal not just as a decontented LaCrosse, but also as a sportier entry is a good choice. The 2011 Regal's lines are taut, more athletic and its direct German heritage will appeal to buyers in this market. When I attended the press event prior to the official unveiling, I had a chance to ask Craig Bierley, Buick's product marketing director, about the Regal's future. Options like ventilated seats could become available after the car's launch, such as when the car is manufactured in North America as opposed to Germany. When switchover from Germany to (most likely) Canada occurs, the Regal could also gain a hybrid option, portholes and other changes. As for more adventurous variations, such as a manual transmission, hotted up 325HP monster motor and station wagon bodystyle, Bierley was much more coy "That would be great, wouldn't it?" he responded to each question. Certainly the fact that Buick is considering these possibilities is welcome news, would greatly enhance the appeal of the car to young buyers and differentiate the Regal from the more luxurious LaCrosse.

Also in attendance at the event were Buick's forthcoming "mini Enclave" Gamma-based crossover and the Delta-based small sedan. These two concepts have not been shown to the public yet and we were not allowed to take photos. The crossover is a tight package, looking for all the world like a smaller Enclave with perhaps a bit more detail in the bodywork. This crossover looks to be smaller that the Acura RDX, but undoubtedly the Acura would be a likely contender. The smaller sedan carries over many cues for the LaCrosse and Regal. Some journalists mistook the sedan for the Regal, an issue that I spoke with GM's design chief Ed Welburn about. "They are not Russian dolls," Welburn quipped about the LaCrosse, Regal, and small sedan trio. Certainly when positioned side by side the differences between the models would be evident, but viewed alone, the small sedan evokes much the same look as its elder sisters. That is not to say that this Chevrolet Cruze stablemate is unattractive, but to my eyes it did not have the pop of the small crossover. It will be very interesting to see these vehicles in their final form, something that cannot happen soon enough.

At each opportunity I can, I routinely ask (he might say harass) Jim Federico, vehicle line executive for GM's mid-sized architecture, about active headrest availability in the USA. The Opel Insignia has a mechanical active headrest, much like the Saab system that tilts forward in the event of an accident to help limit whiplash, but it will not be available in the 2011 Buick Regal due to differences in regulations. Federico says that GM is working on both active and non-active systems for the USA, but there is no timetable for implementation. While the LaCrosse certainly is no slouch in the safety department, just look at its fabulous "Top Safety Pick" finish in the recent IIHS testing, I believe that having active headrests is an important marketing tool, another box that can be ticked when comparing against the competition and would be a welcome addition to the Buick lineup.

General Motors' team in attendance: Docherty, Welburn, Lutz to name a few, are a promising bunch. While it is uncertain how much longer Lutz will stay un-retired, he is always at the center of the media's attention. Docherty and Welburn are both very bright and personable people to interview. Ms. Docherty and I spoke about the Regal event, and she stressed how important it was for the event to be about GM's customers. Post bankruptcy GM has made a big effort to connect with buyers, whether at experiential marketing events, "Tweet Ups," blogger-only affairs and parties like the one held in Hollywood. The company's future plans are no longer the privileged information of media elites and financial analysts, but with the people who are actually going to buy the cars being shown.

In summary, how does the 2011 Buick Regal measure up? Since we have not been allowed to get behind the wheel, there is only so much we can surmise. However, the Regal's nearly twin sister the Opel Insignia has scooped up a nice chunk of automotive awards in Europe, so that is a good sign. As I had stated in the first part of this series, the Regal doesn't quite have the visual pizazz of the LaCrosse, but I happen to think the LaCrosse is the best looking sedan in its category, bar none. The turbo motor and adaptive suspension are promising and an even higher performance model is quite mouth watering. All of these new Buick's will cause buyers to at least consider the brand and as evidenced by the LaCrosse, conquest rates will rise as a result. Rome wasn't built in a day and Buick won't transform overnight but it now possesses a fighting chance and will no longer have to compete with Saturn for all the choice hardware. I could sense some of the ice thawing when I spoke to a BMW owner at the event. While the young buyer was not willing to give up his BMW 3 Series, he said he could see the Regal catching on with younger buyers. With China providing the greater chunk of sales, Buick will be allowed greater freedoms than US sales volume alone could ever support. That is nothing but good news for Americans who have a fond place in their hearts for the tri-shield brand. Now how about that Chinese Park Avenue?

Below this post is a video walkaround I took of the 2011 Buick Regal.

2011 Buick Regal live in Hollywood: Up close and personal

2011 Buick Regal in Hollywood (source: msheena)

On my way to the 2011 Buick Regal event , hosted yesterday (November 12) at the Hollywood Palladium, I had some time to kill at LAX while I waited for my ride. As I stood outside baggage claim, I tried to count how many Buicks drove past. It turns out it was a very easy job, besides an older Century and previous generation LaCrosse, nary a Buick sped by. That dearth of market penetration explained part of the reason why I was in LA to cover a Buick, two things you probably wouldn’t put together. Buick is changing and it would dearly love Californians to give it another chance.

View a slideshow of the 2011 Buick Regal live in Hollywood in the slideshow below this article. For official GM imagery, you can view this linked slideshow of the 2011 Buick Regal.

Buick has been on a bit of a roll. The Buick Enclave crossover has received a lot of notice and re-launched the brand. The recently arrived 2010 Buick LaCrosse kept that momentum going as one of the best looking Buick sedans in decades. Now Buick is turning to the 2011 Buick Regal to keep the ball rolling.

Both the LaCrosse and Regal share a common platform, Epsilon II, with the Regal coming in just a bit shorter than the LaCrosse (four inches less on the wheelbase and 6.7 inches shorter overall) . From an exterior perspective, the Regal is the plainer looking of the two cars. The Opel Insignia was going to be next Saturn Aura, but that plan was changed when the ringed brand was phased out. This shift in GM’s game plan allowed the Chinese Regal to arrive stateside. The Regal's front end has the traditional Buick waterfall grille, but its execution is less elegant that the LaCrosse. The side profile is clean, but you really miss drama of the LaCrosse’s sweep-spear. The trunk of the LaCrosse is a bit discordant to me, with its integrated ducktail spoiler, it doesn’t match up Buick’s design language.

You might notice in the slideshow below that there are no portholes on the Regal's hood. Initially Regals shipped from Germany will not be wearing the Buick signature styling queue. I asked GM design chief Ed Welburn about missing portholes and he said that "All Buicks should have portholes" but would not officially comment on when the Regal might get them. I speculate that this will remedied when Regal production moves to North America.

The Regal on display at the Palladium had its doors locked, so I was unable to capture any interior shots. However, we do have official imagery from GM, and simply peering into the Regal’s windows reveals what you might expect: A pleasing design that looks modern and well executed. While there might be a few more buttons on the center stack than you would like to see, there is little to argue about. General Motors has clearly grasped an understanding of how a car’s interior should look and feel and has moved to the head of the class.

Below this article is a video I shot from the reveal event. Susan Docherty, GM sales chief, and Bob Lutz, GM marketing chief, co-introduce the 2011 Buick Regal.

Will there be a manual transmission? How about an OPC version? What future models, not yet revealed to the general public, did Buick show us? What was Colbie Caillat like? All these questions and much more material area headed your way in part two of this series, stay tuned!

2011 Buick Regal debut

2011 Buick Regal (source: gm)

Here is the Chinese version of the Buick Regal (source: gm)

General Motors released official imagery of the 2011 Buick Regal in advance of its official reveal in Los Angeles. I will be in Los Angeles , Thursday, November 12, to cover the launch.

View the just released images of the 2011 Buick Regal in the slideshow in this link. If you want to see more of the Chinese Buick Regal, then view this slideshow of images. If you want to see a glimpse of the high performance Opel Insignia OPC, then view this slideshow of images.

The 2011 Buick Regal will arrive in the second quarter of 2010 and slot in beneath the Buick LaCrosse as a slightly lower priced, differently styled model. A 2.4 liter four cylinder pumping out 182 estimated horsepower will be mated to GM's Hydra-Matic 6T45 six speed automatic transmission. Later on in 2010 a 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged and direct injected engine rated at an estimated 220 horsepower will be on offer as well.

The turbo model will have optional Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) which offers driver-selectable suspension settings and automatic driver suspension setting adaptability. While this falls short of the OPC version I had hoped for, the availability of IDCS shows that the turbocharged 2011 Buick Regal will have some sporting intentions. I will have much more information on the 2011 Buick Regal after the launch party. For now, enjoy this YouTube classic of a Chinese buyer who simply will not leave the dealership without her own Buick Regal.

2010 Camaro buyer is 101 years old

2010 Camaro Transformers special edition (courtesy:gm)

I can only hope that when I am 101 years old, I will buy able to walk into a car dealership and buy a hot sports car inspired by a movie popular with kids less that 1/5th my age.

You can check out more pictures of the Transformers Edition Camaro and Bumblebee in this slideshow link.

That is exactly what Virgil Coffman did when he popped for a retina searing yellow, Transformers Edition Camaro at a Decatur, Illinois dealership.

I have to admit, when I first heard about this guy I immediately thought of Sally O'Malley, "I'm fifty...Fifty years old." By Virgil's standards, Sally is just a kid. Great pick, Virgil, I hope you enjoy your ride, I certainly enjoyed my time in one! Hear what Virgil has to say about the Camaro in the video embedded below.

Ford will not sell global Ford Ranger in United States

Ford Ranger in Thailand is living like a rock star!

Meanwhile the US Ford Ranger gets a white background

My brother-in-law will be crushed, Ford CEO Alan Mulally has told the industry trade publication Automotive News that the United States will not be getting the Australian developed "global" T6 Ranger when the current Ranger sold here in the States finally heads to the glue factory.

Could there be a conspiracy within Ford to favor international versions of the Ranger? Probably not, but let's say there is a conspiracy and have some fun in this slideshow.

Currently, the ancient (but lovable) Ranger sold in the United States is not related to the Ranger you can buy elsewhere in the world. Many websites, including the highly regarded PickupTrucks.com have speculated that the forthcoming Australian design T6 Ranger would be a strong possibility for the USA. Given the "One Ford" strategy, it would only make sense that one version of the Ranger be designed for sale around the world instead of unique versions sold in certain markets.

Mulally's did not say what Ford's US Ranger plans are for the future, but it seems hard to believe that the Blue Oval will give up the Ranger legacy. Ranger owners are loyal and their pickups take on family member status. You cannot buy that kind of car/owner relationship and to simply walk away from it would be foolish. So far Mulally and his team have not given us any reason to believe that they are foolish, so what gives?

Back when the Ford F-100 project was in full swing, there was speculation that the sub-F-150 model would supplant the Ranger, but when the F-100 got the axe so did this Ranger replacement theory.

It is unclear, since Automotive News does not provide a direct quote, exactly what Mulally meant when he said the US will not get the global Ranger. Does he simply mean that we will get an exact copy but in fact a semi-unique variant or does he truly mean no T6 whatsoever. Seeing as how I do not have Alan on my speed dial, I cannot give him a call to clarify.

The US Ranger rang up 3,910 sales in October 2009, a 0.5 percent increase from 3,891 in October 2008.

Mulally also told Automotive News that the Ka will not be sold in the States either.

Please note: While this article refers to the forthcoming, T6 Ranger, the international model shown in this article is the Thailand Ford Ranger.

Mulally: Ford Ka not headed to the United States

Ford Ka shares frame with Olga Kurylenko (source: Ford)

The diminutive Ford Ka will not be heading to the United States according to a recent Automotive News interview with Ford CEO Alan Mulally. In the interview, Mulally stated to the trade publication,

Our view is that the Fiesta is about the smallest vehicle that we think will be a real success in the United States.

Some industry watchers had speculated that because Fiat will offer the Ka's sister vehicle the Fiat 500 in the United States, Ford might team up and sell the Ka here as well. If Ford were to have shared a North American manufacturing facility like it does with Fiat in Poland it would have been a relatively thrifty way to dip its toes in the water.

View a slideshow of the current Ka and its predecessor in the the gallery below this article.

Apparently, Ford doesn't think that enough of a market exists and it might be right. The Fiat 500 will sell, at least initially, because it is as cute as a bug, but the modern looking Ford Ka might have tougher go of things. My own experience with the previous generations of the Ford Fiesta and Ford Ka led me to the conclusion that the Fiesta would be as small as I would likely go. Of course, the latest Ka is a more substantial vehicle, but in terms of pricing and content, I think the sweet spot in the USA will be the Fiesta.

Europhiles should not complain about Ford denying Americans its Old World finery, however, because the company is bringing a slew of European models such as the Fiesta, Focus (current Euro generation shown, we get the next version), Grand C-Max and Kuga (Kuga not officially announced for USA) over the course of the next few years.

My precious! General Motors hangs on to Opel

My precious! General Motors decides to keep Opel

In a move that was almost telegraphed, General Motors has announced today that it will keep its European subsidiary Opel/Vauxhall.

In a press release from GM, CEO Fritz Henderson spoke about the decision,

While strained, the business environment in Europe has improved. At the same time, GM’s overall financial health and stability have improved significantly over the past few months, giving us confidence that the European business can be successfully restructured. We are grateful for the hard work of the German and other EU governments in navigating this difficult economic period. We’re also appreciative of the effort put forward by Magna and its partners in Russia in trying to reach an equitable agreement.

In terms of moving forward with the revised plan Henderson stated,

GM will soon present its restructuring plan to Germany and other governments and hopes for its favorable consideration. We understand the complexity and length of this issue has been draining for all involved. However, from the outset, our goal has been to secure the best long term solution for our customers, employee, suppliers, and dealers, which is reflected in the decision reached today. This was deemed to be the most stable and least costly approach for securing Opel/Vauxhall’s long-term future.

General Motors cited improving conditions, but many auto analysts had questioned the move from the beginning. Given General Motors push towards globally shared platforms, it was questionable to hand over control of a key developer of those platforms to a third party. For example, the Opel Insignia is sold in China and next year in the United States as the Buick Regal (view a slideshow of the Chinese Buick Regal in this link): Essentially the same car with only light retouching. General Motors' South American offerings also draw heavily from Opel platforms.

The next big hurdle for GM will be pacifying Opel's workers, no easy task considering that workers put their full support into the Magna deal.

Backseat driver moves to the front: MIT's AIDA

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Volkswagen of America are working on a navigation system with a real attitude: Affective Intelligent Driving Agent (AIDA) can smile, look sad, show warning signs, wink at you and even hand out drunken compliments (okay, I made that last one up).

View a slideshow of AIDA in action (with some bonus commentary) in this link.

The chunky little device with an expressive screen sits on the dash and can learn where you work and live, where your favorite grocery store is located, your favorite parts of town and sense your mood: Kind of like your own personal stalker. MIT claims the device will help drivers by being empathetic to their moods and assisting them in navigating their urban jungle.

Over time AIDA learns your favorite parts of town and makes suggestions based on information it is able to gather. For example, AIDA could notify you about a street fair and help steer you around it on your commute home or direct you towards it on a Saturday morning. One would hope that AIDA could differentiate between drivers, lest it confuse your predilection for strip clubs with your spouse's interest in farmer's's markets: That could be really awkward.

Enjoy a demonstration video embedded below.

For more info: Visit MIT's AIDA webpage.
