Girlfriend vs. Car

Oh, boy...This is a big one! A fellow over at VW Vortex come homes home with 2006 GTO nipping at his heels. The car does not go over well with his girlfriend who, probably in the heat of the moment, threatens to leave if the car stays. His defense is that he brings home the bacon and they don't share bank accounts so therefore he can buy a shiny new red car whenever he wants. Now granted we are only getting one side of the story here. We don't know how often he buys stuff on a whim or overspends. However, I still think it brings up a real issue for car enthusiasts--husband or wife.

Let's face it, most cars make terrible investments. It's almost always better to repair the car that you have and run it into the ground. But for real car nuts that argument won't fly. Cars become objects of desire and the whole shopping experience can be a treat! When I shop for a new car, it's usually weekend after weekend of test driving. This drives my wife nuts! She only comes along when I start to get serious and have narrowed my choices down.

A lot of the responses on the thread are to the effect “dump the girlfriend and keep the car” but there are more real world answers that acknowledge that bringing a home a new car without any consultation was a decision that has be worked out. Of course threatening to leave is a “questionable” threat, but again we don’t know all the facts.
