They Could Have Called Gary Coleman
...and the fine folks at Cash Call for some extra spendin' money, but selling the smart roadster/coupe to "Project Kimber" comes a close second. The speculation about this deal has been around for some time, but today is the day that DaimlerChrysler issued a press release announcing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The press release states that the MoU would give Kimber "The licence to redesign, produce and sell the former smart models roadster and roadster-coupé under a different brand" and the intention of Kimber to "purchase production equipment for both models that is not needed by smart anymore." I applaud the move to keep alive the cheeky little car and wish its new owners all the best in bringing it back to the showroom floor. Hopefully the funds earned from this sale will go into the plus column on smart's balance sheet and help take some of the pressure off the division. I still believe that the fortwo would sell well in the USA, just check out this Canadian's "clever idea" on how to make you a smart owner...that was until "the G-Man" called him.
