Hyundai Genus Concept

Hyundai keeps poppin out these crossover concepts so you know that there will be one or more headed towards production. Obviously influenced by the Mercedes R-Class, although smaller (187" overall length as opposed to the US R-Class which is 203"),and more wagon like this D segment people mover is a good looking design in my book. Speaking of the R-Class, I've only seen a few on the road and I must say that they are quite monstrous looking. I just can't get into the front end styling of that car.

Given that the Genus debuted in Geneva it features a 2.2 liter common-rail diesel, but undoubtedly a whole range of engines could be wedged under the hood. From Hyundai's press release:

For maximum versatility, the floor features an integral hatch which can be lifted to reveal a retractable bench seat. The bench extends out to rest over the trunk sill and together with a sliding deck that is concealed in the bumper, it forms a multi-use outside seating area. The sliding deck can also be used separately for transportation of bicycles and other sports equipment. The side windows are are fully retractable and together with a large panoramic glass roof enable multisensorial experiences normally associated with coupes and cabriolets.

I like the idea behind crossovers--car like handling and nice styling with the roominess of an SUV--but every time I really look at the interior I think about how much space I'm giving up from the Odyssey. I tell you, the space that a minivan provides can be quite addicting--especially when there is really no fuel mileage penalty as compared to crossovers. However as showcased with concepts like the Genus, you can pick up quite a few style points over a minivan
