Jif Peanut Butter, Duncan Hines...Buick, Pontiac?

Procter & Gamble has sold off Jif, Duncan Hines, and other well known brands and some experts are recommending that GM might follow that lead and kill off Buick and Pontiac. These critics charge that consumers know the difference between Scion, Toyota and Lexus, but struggle with GM's juggernaut of brands. Spending on cars is flat and auto sales are not growing ahead of gross domestic product, so the auto companies are fighting for share. Who's gaining momentum in this environment? Only Toyota and Porsche are showing signs of growth in "perceived value." Other companies that have a lot of brand power include BMW, Mercedes, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Volkswagen, Renault and Lexus.

The MSNBC article mentions the death of Oldsmobile, but mentions nothing of Plymouth's passing. You can read the full story here.
