GM / Ford Alliance?

Automotive News is reporting that senior executives at General Motors and Ford Motor Co. have discussed a merger or alliance. The likelihood of such a merger is very slim (the two companies are not holding talks) but even the fact that the idea has been considered is of interest. Of course, Ford and GM aren’t complete strangers to cooperation: both manufacturers are launching vehicles this fall using an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission that they jointly developed. However, with Ford having a new CEO to focus on and GM still working through its 90 day study of the Ghosn proposal I sincerely doubt that much will actually come of this. Much more likely in my mind would be continued collaboration in the development of specific components or advanced technologies.
