The folks over at cars.com have posted a nice review of the forthcoming smart fortwo. The post brings up no new ground, but it does cover all the bases: the car requires premium fuel, 24 month warranty, "automatic" transmission that really isn't automatic, etc.
I think the bottom line on this car is, you either enjoy its style and European heritage or you don't get it at all. If you're more of the practical sort, a Fit, Versa or Yaris is probably going to be more up your alley.
I've spoken with a number of journalists who attended the smart media preview and they all complained about the transmission. Well, yes it is true that the automatic clutch, manual transmission can be very balky if you simply place it in drive and mash the throttle: you're not going to like what happens. However, if you either shift manually or lift off the gas during shifts you'll be a lot happier with the car. And if you think that this transmission is awkward, try driving the first generation!
