I have to say, I've always thought that 3,000 mile oil changes were a bit of a waste. Now the spotlight is being cast on this practice by the California Integrated Waste Management Board which as created a website called 3000milemyth.org which attempts to convince consumers to rethink their frequent oil changing ways.
Needless to say, the Automotive Oil Change Association is none to happy about this campaign, stating that calling the 3k oil change a myth is a broad overstatement and that people should read their owner's manual and also factor in their driving habits and age of their car.
Interestingly enough, according to 3000milemyth.org's website, the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra do require 3,000 mile oil change intervals. I'd be interested in seeing documentation on that one.
What it all boils down to is RTFM and check your oil levels and appearance from time to time and that's no myth.
BTW: Bonus points to those folks who get the connection between the two pictures.
