McCain Could Make Energizer Bunny a Very Rich Hare

Sen. McCain offers $300 million prize for new auto battery - Yahoo! News

"The presumed Republican nominee is proposing a $300 million government prize to whoever can develop an automobile battery that far surpasses existing technology. The bounty would equate to $1 for every man, woman and child in the country, 'a small price to pay for helping to break the back of our oil dependency,' McCain said in remarks prepared for delivery Monday at Fresno State University in California."

Energy is shaping up to be a huge campaign issue. By offering the mother of all XPrizes for a battery that beats all, McCain wants to show that he can also propose alternatives that don't require drilling. I would venture that the pressure on automotive manufacturers and suppliers is so great that a $300 million prize will bring little additional incentive to the table: it's already crunch time. Tax credits to help early adopters purchase plug-in hybrids would be sufficient.
