Hey, Nice Wagon! Opel Insignia Sports Tourer

GM has bestowed five images of the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer upon us. I think this wagon “out Audi’s” Audi for appeal, at least the exterior’s design, but would that hold water here in the U.S. market? Quite some time ago it was rumored that Saturn would be the Insignia (Vectra) wagon, but lots of things have changed since then. Now that the next Aura will be taking its sweet time in getting here, I’m not sure that we’ll see this lovely creature on our side of the pond.

It’s a real shame that Americans left wagons in the dust decades ago. What models are left in our market sell in small numbers, which are fine for high end manufacturers that don’t need to sell mass quantities for a wagon to pencil out. Subaru is one of the rare exceptions of a company still committed to wagons and hatches (hatches are starting to reappear from other manufacturers). I thought the Dodge Magnum was really a great muscle wagon, but its cancellation shows that the muscle wagon segment is pretty darn small. The Saab 9-5 will be based on the same architecture and I hope that it will continue to offer a wagon variant here in the States. Maybe the Saab will be even better looking?
