Bolivians Ban Imported Cars That Are Over 5 Years Old

Ah, the lure of the cheap, used car from Japan. It seems that ever since a rule change in 2003 that allowed the importation of Japanese right-hand-drive cars, many Bolivians have taken advantage of the durable, economical vehicles that have become available. The vehicles are purchased off boats that dock at Chilean ports and then are driven to Bolivia and converted to left-hand drive. Now Bolivia's car population has exploded and the resulting pollution, injuries and traffic problems have forced the government to act. Folks are none to happy about the new crackdown and there have already been some protests.

It's not all anger and protests, however, Boliva's administrative capital, La Paz, pays college kids to dress in floppy zebra suits and scold new drivers for blocking downtown crosswalks.
