As you might have suspected, the official response from the folks organizing the Bay Area's fishing/hunting/travel exposition is to accentuate the positive and not focus on the economy. Fair enough, at least the ISE's press rep was able to say it with a very cheerful British accent (always a bonus in my book). As previously mentioned, I have link that'll save you a few bucks on admission.
I'll be attending the ISE and I'll be looking around to see what the overall mood is like. Interestingly, the PR group that handles the ISE also lists the Motor Trend auto shows as a client. The Motor Trend show is running in San Jose during the same time frame as the sports show in San Mateo (January 8-11, 2009). Sadly, my attempt to cover both events was nixed by the wife.
Below is the actual blurb from ISE, just be sure you say it with the accent so that you get maximum effect.
"We look forward to welcoming Bay Area residents to the only Fishing, Hunting and Destination-Travel show in the area. The show really is the best place to check out new products and get the best deal, which we know is imperative in the current economic climate. Gear aside the expo features entertainment and activities the whole family can enjoy. From hands on fishing workshops, to dog jumping contests, an off-road test track, adventure theatre, and seminars and movies led by celebrities, authors and experts in fishing, camping, survival, photography, cooking, travel and hunting."
