Leapin' Leipzig: Porsche Panamera Starts Production

Bay area drivers love Porsche, so it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing the new Panamera sedan prowling our highways and byways soon enough. I mention the Panamera today because it just started production at Porsche's Leipzig facility.

Feelings are mixed about the sedan, with some folks less than taken with its backside. I pretty much split opinion down the middle, as I think the car look much better than the Cayenne SUV but far less sensual that the Cayman sports car. The rather awkward roof life is a result of Porsche's desire to provide a habitable back seat. Given the price of this car, the back seat is probably the only place I would be sitting in so kudos to Porsche for making it roomy. Is the Panamera all that it could have been? No, but let's face it, it could have been far worse.

As with any Porsche, you had better have saved up your pennies. The Panamera starts at $89,900 and quickly rises from there. The top of the line Turbo model starts at $132,600 before any options are added.

For more information check out Porsche USA's website or if you are interested in taking a factory tour in Germany visit the Leipzig facility's web page.

Auto Wisdom From Miley Cyrus

It's, like, so hard to drive. Oh. My. Gosh. That's report from Miley Cyrus about here old Porsche that she has since swapped for a Prius. Cyrus told Ryan Seacrest that the Porsche was a tank, it felt "really huge" and was hard to drive.

Of course, Ms. Cyrus is so wise about other things as evidenced by the above photo.

Somehow I think Porsche will be okay and BTW, most Porsche's actually get pretty decent Miley-age.

Random Porsche Pictures

A few pictures of Porsches that I snapped while walking through their display. LA was the "world premiere" for the reworked Cayman and Boxster. The highlights would be new engines and the availability of the dual-clutch PDK gearbox that everyone has salivated over in the 911. I've always had a weakness for this brand, but never actually popped for one (although I cam very close to assuming someones lease on a Boxster). I'd like to think I'd own one some day, but it's not on my "bucket list."

Porsche Panamera: A Good Egg?

There is little worry in my mind that the Panamera will sell, just like the Cayenne that proceeded it. While many Porsche fans love slinky coupes, they really need four doors for a lot of their day-to-day life. The Panamera isn't going to be a bargain, priced well in excess of $100k for even the entry level models. That's a lot of cabbage if you ask me.

Panavision: Porsche Panamera Mule in SF

Thanks to Flickr user Hysterical Bertha we now have suitcases full of Porsche Panamera images to pore over. Exciting? Sexy? Meh, I wouldn't go that far. As much as I like a functional, four door hatch, somehow the Panamera isn't appearing in my dreams at night. Something is just not so appealing about this Porsche's booty. For comparison's sake, I've posted photos of rear ends that I find more attractive: Aston Martin's Rapide concept and Kim Kardashian. There really is no comparison, is there?

BTW, Nice try with the fake chrome surround on the windows. I supposed it looks convincing from afar, but it's far from good. Check out the entire photo gallery on Flickr!

Porsche Panamera Spyshot: Junk In the Trunk

When I lay awake at night, dreaming of a four door Porsche, it doesn't have a rear end like this one. There is still some camouflage on this mule (top photo) so we can't any final judgements, but it is a bit worrying. The second photo is the official teaser shot that Porsche released awhile ago.

When Porsche Adds Doors

When Porsche adds doors, I just get a bit queasy. The official teaser and a spy shot of Porsche's forthcoming sedan plus the Cayenne are shown above. I have never liked any angle of Porsche's SUV, but I am lukewarm-ish on the sedan. From the front, I like the car quite a bit. But from the side, it just seems like the car goes on for too long. Once we get some beauty shots of the Panamera I'll probably change my mind and be totally enamoured with the car. For now, you'll have to content yourself with the excellent photo gallery that Motor Authority has assembled. Click here to check it out.

Porsche Panamera Shots

Here are some shots of the Panamera in testing mode and a few artist's rendering with which to compare them against. I sure like this type of four door Porsche as opposed to something like the Cayenne.

Stealing a Porsche: Crack Keyless Entry? No. Slim Jim? No. Flower Pot? Check!

Yep, a thief in Germany stole a Porsche with nothing more than the clever use of a flower pot. Placing the pot in the path of a reversing car, the thief waited for the unsuspecting owner to get out of the car to investigate. As the owner was bending down to remove the flower pot that had jammed against a tire, the thief pushed him aside, leaped behind the wheel and drove off in his grey Porsche.
