Corolla Delayed!; First Honda’s to Get Diesel Would be Civic, Accord, & CRV; Fairlane a Go
Toyota has delayed the Corolla redesign until spring of 2008. This one surprises me as Toyota is usually like clock work on model changes. With smaller cars really starting to heat up in the US, it would seem to me that Toyota would want its best players in the game. Are they making last minute changes? Supplier problems? More information on this will surely follow.
Honda is developing new diesel engines that will satisfy very stringent US emissions requirements. The first cars to get the nod would be the Civic, Accord and CR-V according to a Honda product planner. I think that diesel engines will be another arrow in the quiver for the company. My own hope is for a diesel Odyssey that would offer +30MPG and cruise over 600+ miles on a tank so that I could make my trip up to Oregon without filling up along the way.
This really isn’t a surprise, it’s been reported as fact for some time, but Automotive News is confirming that Ford will have production version of the Fairlane concept. Lincoln will also get its own model, hopefully with meaningful differentiation. Ford really can’t do worse than the doomed Freestar/Monterey twins. I’ve never really understood while Ford and GM could never crack the code on minivans in the first place, it’s not rocket science after all. Look at Kia and Hyndai, it didn’t take very long for them to field a credible entry with the new Sedona/Entourage.

Toyota was caught with their pants down again!!! When the new Honda Civic was unvailed it was so far advanced compared to the next generation Corolla, Toyota had no choice but to scrap their feeble attempt and start all over again from scratch!!! Toyota has become very complacent over the years now and are resting on their laurels and it shows!!! Someday soon, they will be in the same position as GM and Ford are in today!!!
