Lexus's Gone Wild! Vinyl Top Spotting
I saw a brand new Lexus IS, bright candy apple red, with chrome wheels and an off white full vinyl top cruising around town today. I couldn’t believe it! I tried to get a camera phone picture of it, but I didn’t want to be too obvious, so naturally it didn’t turn out. I’ve also seen a few Cadillac CTS’s with vinyl roofs as well. I can understand a Cadillac buyer’s hankering to relive the old days, but what’s up with the Lexus?
My uncle’s ’77 Electra had a full vinyl top and his ’85 DeVille had a half vinyl top. Those cars looked okay, but I haven’t seen any of today’s cars that would look good with that treatment—certainly not this Lexus. Since I didn’t get a shot of the car, I did the next best thing and got a picture of Chrysler Corp’s “Mod Top” from the late sixties / early seventies. A crazy paisley print on the roof and you could get the upholstery to match! Yowzers!
