Nitrogen for Your Tires

For awhile I wondered what those green valve stem covers meant. I finally tracked them down to Costco who was using them to signal that they used pure nitrogen to fill the tires. What’s the big deal? Nitrogen molecules are bigger than oxygen molecules, so nitrogen seeps out more slowly from tires that filled with air (which is 78 percent nitrogen). Nitrogen also resists heat buildup better than air, which contains moisture; and nitrogen reduces oxidation, which can damage the tire from the inside out.

Folks are claiming that they get gas mileage with their nitrogen filled tires. As the phrase goes “your mileage may vary” but it may be worth a shot. For folks with a tire pressure monitoring system, you might reap an additional benefit. TPM systems are notorious for being quite sensitive to temperature changes and nitrogen should be more resistant to that. If you are experiencing a lot of false alarms, you might want to give nitrogen a try.

I have been using nitrogen in my tires for a couple of years now. I rarely have to check my tire pressure. Usually every 5000 miles when I have the tires rotated. It cost about $3.00 a tire to have them filled the first time & then free refills there after. I recommend using nitrogen.
