Ouch, That Smarts! Toyota Going After the fortwo?
Vince Burlapp brought to our attention a Toyota mule that looks rather smart fortwo sized. Vince says that the sub-Aygo would go head to head directly against the smart.
Now Edmunds weighs in with some flashy sketches that appear to be in the overall shape of Vince's spy shot. Both Vince and Edmunds say that the car is going to compete directly with the smart. Synchronicity, no? Maybe, but Edmunds says that this is the next Aygo. I find that hard to believe. The Aygo, a cooperative venture between Toyota, Citroen and Peugeot, isn't ready for replacement. Besides, it would seem odd that Toyota would shrink the Aygo even further. For comparison I've thrown in a picture of the current Aygo 3-door model.
I'm going to place this car in the sub-Aygo class. What a shame for smart if this turns out to be true. Having just started to get its haus in order and focus on a single bodystyle, Toyota could really whack the division in the knees with a competing model. I don't think that the world is big enough for two fortwos.
