Within the next 60 days, smart will begin accepting $99 "reservations" for the forthcoming fortwo. What exactly does the $99 get you? Well, I can tell you what it won't buy you: a place in line. In fact I can't really say that it gets you anything at this point. The $99 can be refunded and I would imagine that these potential buyers will be given some sort of special treatment, perhaps in the form of promotional schwag or special events.
Of course it will do wonders for Penske, because it will give them a window into the world of smart buyers. How many are there? What colors and packages will they prefer? Not to mention the fact that anyone willing to plunk down a deposit for essentially vaporware is a really motivated buyer and the kind of sales lead that any dealership would kill for.
Here are some additional details that have been revealed:
There will be an 800 number using the emergency-services SOS 24/7 call center run by Penske Truck Leasing.
Using the United Technical Institute, which has trained more than 18,000 automotive technicians, to set up and run the training program for Smart.
Offering high levels of personalization for the ForTwo, including changeable door panels that can be swapped in 90 minutes, foil wraps and performance packages.
