Sunday Ramblings: Tiguans-a-Go-Go, Hybrid Boats

We all piled into the family truckster yesterday and went about the weekend rituals of buying groceries and returning items to various stores. While merging back onto 101 I noticed a transporter full of small SUVs speed by. The trouble was, I couldn't immediately place the model. So naturally, I floored the van and began the chase. A couple of seconds later it came to me: VW Tiguan. It's a fairly innocuous exterior design but sitting in the cabin at one of the auto shows, I was impressed with the Tig's interior and "Hey, look! A manual transmission!" The real differentiator for VW will be the TDI, but Winding Road is reporting that the TDI Tiguan isn't a certainty for the US market. I'd say that it is only a matter of time before we see a diesel Tiguan here in the USA. VW fans are rabid diesel folks who "get it" and would be willing to pay a premium for the oil burner.

The SF Chronicle had a post about the "world's first hybrid recreational boat." The 25' Frauscher Bootswerft boat sports diesel engines in addition to its electric powertrain. The point of the hybrid boat is that most emissions happen while idling, something the hybrid would avoid. Have no fear, once the Bootswerft is underway, it'll suck down fuel with the best of 'em. If you really want to go green while boating, how about this all-electric Edison?

Pretty sharp looking, no? As a bonus you can thumb your nose at all-electric Duffy owners right after they tell you that only electric boats are allowed in Foster City's lagoons.
