In addition to the Sport Wagon, Cadillac has also shared a few pictures of the SRX crossover. The SRX and the forthcoming Saab 9-4x are riding on an upgraded Theta platform, loosely called “Theta Premium” or “Theta Epsilon.” I’m anxious to see the finished interior because it could make it or break it for me.
No matter how you spin it, Theta roots run deep at GM. Saturn’s Vue (Opel Antara), Chevrolet’s Equinox and a GMC variant also share the Theta heritage. Despite a recent downturn in sales, crossovers are still quite hot and GM wants to make sure it can fully capitalize on the trend. However, I’m not so sure we need all of these models. Any other variants are really going to have to struggle to be relevant. It’s understandable that Saab wants a piece of the action, but can it truly be differentiated from the Cadillac? I’m not so certain of this. Is a GMC model really needed other than to keep Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealers stocked? Ideally, I can see three unique models here. The Saturn Vue, a slightly longer Chevrolet Equinox and a luxurious Cadillac.
