Acura Gets Honda's First V8

Confirmation comes from Honda Motor CEO Takeo Fukui that Acura will be the recipient of Honda's first V8 engine. Acura has always been the odd man out in the luxury field, sporting efficient V6 engines in its flagship sedans, but lacking the cache to really compete with the other manufacturers in this field. Fukui promises that the new V8 will be innovative and efficient.

There is no official word on which Acura product will receive the engine first, but there is a strong belief in the Acura dealer community that the redesigned RL, due in 2010, will offer the V8 engine.

Does Acura really need to switch to a V8 to compete with BMW and Lexus in these changing economic and automotive times?

If the horse power and torque ratings of the new eight proves to be competitive with the competition while providing better gas mileage then I say yes. Charge ahead with all eight cylinders!

Or is this just bad timing for a car maker that has exercised, up till now, smart decision making over it's long and industrious career?
