Nissan Pulls Out of Detroit Show, ACATT Might Not Go Either

It's not a ghost town yet, but you just might be able to here the wind rustling (in addition to the people mover) as you walk around Cobo this January. Nissan is but the latest manufacturer to say "no thanks" to the premiere North American show. Other automakers taking a leave of absence from Detroit include Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari. In addition to Detroit, Nissan topped other automakers by also bowing out of the Chicago show in February as well. Why? Well to save cash of course, but Nissan also feels that the Los Angeles show was able to effectively communicate its 2009 offerings.

Given the current state of affairs, I don't know that I'll be attending Detroit. In addition to dropping out of auto shows, automakers are also cutting back on social media budgets and that means that little old blogs such as ACATT aren't getting as many free trips. For example, the Los Angeles show set me back over $350 to attend and I was being as frugal as I could. If I were to travel to Detroit on my own dime, it'd be at least double if not triple the expense. I haven't completely ruled out NAIAS, but unless someone steps up to fund the trip, I probably won't make the journey on my own.

I hear ya! I was at L.A. on my own dime too and paid more than double what you did to get there and see the show. Detroit is definitely iffy (who is going to pull out next) and Chicago is still appealing, but it'll cost me $$$ if I have to shell out my own money. NYC looks possible especially if I stay with family, but I may not hit another show again 'til SEMA next November.

Hey Matt!

How are you doing? Things sure have changed since I saw you in Detroit in January! LA set you back a few bucks as well, eh? My friend Phil over at TopSpeed was going to attend LA, but when his friend's house burned down he bailed out.

Anyhoo, I'm thinking that Detroit might be a little depressing this year. Now Honda is saying that they'll be there, but there will be no flash or sizzle. It's too bad, but hopefully things will work themselves out over the course of '09 and we can all celebrate in 2010. At least I hope so!

Take care!
