UAW: No More Concessions

I have been a big booster for federal aid for automakers because I feel that allowing a major manufacturing base to crumble would be bad news for our county and millions of its workers. However, when I read an article this morning about the UAW's president flatly stating "No more concessions," it upsets me greatly. We're only beginning to see the fallout from this financial mess that has gripped this country and already I've seen friends outside the automobile industry get their walking papers. These are hard working, family supporting folks who are going to be in a world of hurt as they try and navigate the job market in such a rough economy. Regardless of how they got to the unemployment line, they have accepted their fate and are moving on with their lives. At no point have they asked, "Where was the bailout money for my former employer?"

Now let us look at the auto industry: it's on the rocks and the surf is pounding down on every company. It would appear that sooner or later federal assistance will arrive, it's more a question of timing. Don't you think, if even from a public relations standpoint, the UAW would at least feign cooperation? No one is asking employees to work 80 hour work weeks for 40 hours worth of wages. No one says that Gettelfinger has to roll over once he's at the bargaining table. However, refusing to even discuss the possibility of concessions or make any further allowances for an industry that has been shaken to its core is in bad taste and it is attitudes like this that have contributed to the current state of affairs. C'mon Gettelfinger, work with us here!
