In an effort to help fill the State's coffers, California Democrats are proposing to replace the 18-cents-per-gallon excise tax and the state's 5-cent share of the sales tax with a 39 cent per gallon "fee." The flat fee equals approximately the amount of the current excise and sales tax on gas if a gallon at the fuel pump cost about $4.
At this point, the gas fee is just part of a package of proposals. Whether or not the Dems get their way remains to be seen. However, I'd expect that any proposal that gets approved will include an increase at the pump.
