Reserve a smart...sorta

So, the smart USA early "registration" page is up and running. You can find it here. Now, for $99 what do you get? Not much. No promises. Just a randomized number (maybe it's serial in some way) and a promise to get a sales call late this year. What I was most disappointed in was that other than some early price estimates, you only pick a model and color:

  • smart fortwo pure ~ $12,000 5-speed automated manual transmission with manual or automatic mode, central remote locking system, 2-spoke leather steering wheel, radio-ready console (that's right, no radio!!!)
  • smart fortwo passion ~ $14,000 panorama roof, alloy wheels, air conditioning with climate control, 3-spoke leather sports steering wheel with shift paddles, power windows, electric and heated side mirrors, and AM/FM radio with CD player
  • smart fortwo passion cabrio ~ $17,000 upgraded radio and sound system that includes an mp3 compatible in-dash 6 CD changer. The main difference lies in the soft top with a heated rear glass window that is fully automatic and can be infinitely adjusted to any position while driving at any speed.
Colors include:
  • blue metallic
  • crystal white
  • red metallic
  • silver metallic
  • light yellow
  • deep black
  • metallic silver or black tridion cell
  • grey interior

No hint at what options you might be able to choose. Of course there is the hope that getting on the train early could entitle you to special gifts, communications, etc.
